WHY DO WE ASK?
1. We ask because God commanded it (Matt. 7:7-11).
2. We ask because we need what only God can give (Rom. 8:32).
3. We ask because we believe God can provide (Eph. 3:20).
4. We ask because we need the humility that results (1 Peter 5:6,7).
5. We ask because God is pleased with our asking (1 John 3:21,22).
5. We ask because God is pleased with our asking (1 John 3:21,22).
WHAT DO WE ASK?
1. We ask for that which lies within the will of God (1 John 5:14,15). a. It is promised in His word ("Thy will be done").
b. It is compatible with His word ("If it be Thy will").
2. We ask for what we really want that is within God's will. a. Our daily needs (Matt. 6:11,13; 1 Tim. 6:8)
b. Our special needs (Heb. 4:14-16)
c. Our desires (Rom. 1:8-10)
HOW DO WE ASK?
1.
2. Positively (Phil. 4:6-8)
3. Visual1y (Heb. 11:1,3,6,7,8-1O, 13-16,24,26,27; 12:1,2; 2 Cor. 4:17,18)
4. Confidently (James 1:5-8)
5. Consistent1y (1 Thess. 5:17) 6. Generously (Luke 6:38)
7. Obediently (1 John 3:21,22) 8. Persistently (Luke 18:1-8)
HOW DOES GOD ANSWER?
1. Direct granting (Matt. 7:7-11)
2. Different granting (2 Kings 5:11)
3. De1ayed granting (1 Sam. 1:7-11)
4. Denial (There may be time when God will deny us our petitions. There are at least seven
reasons why this might happen.)
a. Something could be hindering our prayers (1 Pet. 3:7)
b. He does not want us to become proud (2 Cor. 12:7,8)
c. Our prayers are self-centered (James 4:3)
d. We are inconsiderate of others in our prayers (Phil. 1:21-26)
e. He wants to build our character through deprivation (2 Cor. 12:9,10)
f. Granting the petition would demand an intervention into the natural order of things
(miracle) (Heb. 9:27; Gal 6:7)
g. We have a deeper need that would not be met other than through deprivation (Dan.
3:17,18)
