The Father of Lies
The three enemies of the soul are the world, the flesh and the devil.
If I were the devil
If I were the Devil i would viciously attack those four divine institutions so graciously given by God to man, namely, the institutions of marriage , human government , the nation Israel , and the church.
Concerning the church , I would continue to attack it from the outside ( just to keep in practice ), but would concentrate the bulk of my evil efforts from within. “ The church is dead” would become my creed and cry. If I were the devil I would do my upmost to convince professing christians that the local church is finished! Not weak, not ineffective , but dead and decaying ! I would encourage them to dig a hole, carve an epitaph, and bury it as quietly and quickly as possible . If I were the devil! ( Baptist Bulletin 1971)
Jesus at this point is talking to the religious figures of the day. They are looking to murder Jesus but they couldn’t because His time had not yet come.
Jesus is cutting them in half saying they do the deeds of there father. They said that Abraham was there father. And Jesus is reminding them if Abraham was there father they would do the deeds of Abraham and they would love Jesus.
41 You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
41 This was an insult against Jesus what they are saying we are not born in fornication like you. We are not illegitimate children like you Jesus. You don’t know who your father is Jesus we do. You are a “Bastard” is what they are to Jesus.
- They hurled many different insults at Jesus they said he had a demon
- They said the works he does are from demons
- They called him a Samaritan
- They said everything about Jesus except the truth.
42 To love Christ is to love God. You can’t say you know God if you don’t know Christ. And Jesus is telling them they are not of God. Because if they where they would love Him.
43 They weren’t able to understand Jesus speech because they where so caught up on there own agenda.
You ever get into a conversation with someone and they aren’t really listening they are just patiently waiting there turn to speak. They are patiently waiting for you to shut up so they can speak.
They where unable to hear, they had a spiritual inability to respond.
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Only the Spirit can discern spiritual things .
44 Its like Jesus is performing miracle after miracle, sign after signs. Jesus is telling crippled men to take up there bed and walk. Feeding of the 5,000. He revealing deep heavenly wisdom ( they said no one talks like this man) to the Jews at this point and they are still not listening.
Then Jesus lets them have it “you are of your father the devil!” I bet you they listened then .
If they weren’t listening before they are listening now.
The devil is the enemy of life and truth.
He’s a murder and a liar.
The devil is the most influential creature in the cosmos.
The devils whole agenda is to murder.
He was a murderer from the beginning
The reason our body feels like a war zone that’s because it is.
NIV: … “When he lies, he speaks his native language.....
Satan signature move is lies
What is a lie : A lie is what doesn’t correspond to reality
Truth is reality
Satan is always giving us things that don’t correspond with reality.
Thats why theres issues with sexuality and marriage.
We are the only creatures that can hold imagination
We have the capacity to imagine reality in our minds.
We also have the capacity to hold unreality in our minds
Thats why we have so many different religions.
So many different systems so many different political parties etc etc.
The devil name is
Diabolos,Diabolical - means adversarial, The adversary, slanderous, accuser
Jesus didn’t even give the devil a name He just called him the adversary.
Hes call the serpent, the dragon. the evil one,
To accuse
1 Chr. 21:1 “1 Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.”
- Satan stands at the right hand of the accused.
Psalm 109:6 “Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand.”
In the Heb that world accuser means satan.
The devil is on the left hand persecuting those in temporal things and on the right hand whom he rules in spiritual things.
Is satan still relevant?
Though morally fallen and now judged at the cross
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Satan has not lost his position, and has lost but little of his power.
Though satan isn’t omni present because he has demons which makes his reach control throughout the whole earth.
Satans personal strength cannot be estimated.
But we do know he has power over the kingdoms of this world.
And he can give that power whom he wills Luke 4:6
6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
Satan is able to give power to whomever he wishes.
Satan has the power of death over the non believer. But now Jesus took it back.
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
Satan has the power to inflict sickness in the case of Job.
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
Satan had the power to sift Peter as wheat
Luke 22:31 (NKJV)
31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.
In Jewish and rabbinic literature the repetition of a name often signifies deep feeling, of either affection or sadness
Though satan has power but we have the authority because we have Christ.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
