It’s easy to believe that if we go to church and do moral things, we will be more worthy than others who aren’t as “good.” But the only reason we can be worthy is because we have a gracious God who sought us out when we were lost and didn’t deserve to be found.
In this passage, Jesus is speaking to Zaccheus, a tax collector shunned by fellow Jews as an irredemable sellout. This scene occurred in the hometown of Rahab, a prostitute who was used by God to secure an important victory centuries earlier. This verse points to two of the Bible’s most morally filthy characters and their redemption stories. When Jesus said he came to seek and save the lost, he meant it. He suffered and died for past, present, and future sins of those who would otherwise be lost: all of us. We’re all in need of saving, especially when we think we can do it ourselves.
As Christ-followers, Jesus’ mission is our mission. How can you seek out the lost and share the saving grace of Christ this season?
