Dearly beloved we are gather today to celebrate the joining of these 2 lives

Who gives this women to be married to this man

Wait we are not at a wedding anymore

As I was thinking on the sermon for this Sunday I was preparing for a wedding yesterday

No I did not give them a sermon and you get the wedding ceremony

But I thought it would be fun to go over some marriage things

Most of us have been to a wedding or been in a wedding right

I have to be honest I don’t like to do weddings

And the reason I don’t like to do weddings is because I take it very very very seriously and in our world today marriage is not taken very seriously at all

So this morning we will look at some scripture that talks about marriage

Genesis 2:24 NASB95

24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

A few things we need to point out this morning

Marriage is between a man and a women

Our society has for far to long continue to allow things to be ok that now the world says its ok for 2 women to be married or 2 men to be married or for 1 man and 4 women to be married

Marriage is strictly between man and women

Then notice that when a man and a women decide to get married they must leave their respective families to form a new family

Not that they will completely leave their families altogether but will need to leave

To separate

To not spend so much time so they can spend time with their spouse

SO they are to leave and then to cleave as Bruce Wilkerson says it in his Biblical Portrait of Marriage series

Because now scripture says they are becoming one

becoming one is not just a physical thing but becoming is a spiritually emotional and physical thing

I told you I take marriage seriously right

So marriage is not something you do on a whim and your like

Hey I like you and you seem to like me so lets get married because if it doesn’t work out that’s ok we can always get divorce

This is why I don’t like doing weddings

Almost everyone I have married I believe I have told them that

I even explain to them that divorce is not an option that you will have to work things out instead of getting divorced

Church marriage is hard

But church marriage is good when we follow God design for marriage

Matthew 19:7–9 NASB95

7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9 “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

Do you notice that divorce wasn’t the original plan for marriage

When Jesus says that it was not always like that because of sin or your hardness of heart God allowed Mose to permit

It wasn’t just because you fell out of love with your spouse that divorce was permitted

So church please listen to me this morning

Divorce is not an option for your marriage

You will have to work at it

Moses did not command divorce

God did not command divorce

But God permitted divorce

For those of you who have experienced divorce you know that it is not easy thing to do

divorce is a painful process to go through

I don’t think anyone sets out to get married only to get divorced

Because we all understand that divorce isn’t an option

And church that is where God is at work right

Because it is also in the brokenness that works

Praise the Lord, God is a comforter and a healer

So lets look at the roles within the marriage

Genesis 2:15 NASB95

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

Husbands in you are to be leaders

God has designed that the man of the house that the man in the marriage be the leader

Specifically God has called you as husbands to lead

To be the protector - we are to protector our families both physically, emotionally and of course spiritually

Provider - we are to provide for our families financially but also emotionally and of course spiritually

Scout - we are to go out and look ahead for our family, as you husband seek the lord you are to look to the future for your family

General - to make the decision, especially when it is time to go out to eat

Physician - to care for your family not just physically but emotionally and spiritually

King - to rule your family with love and compassion and grace and mercy

And Priest

Church to be the leader is to be the priest of your family to lead your family to run after Christ

Husband if you don’t have the a personal relationship with Jesus then you cannot expect to be the priest of your family

And if you won’t lead your family to run after Jesus then who will

You are to lead your family to run after Jesus

If we have covered leaving and divorce and husbands to be leaders

We should just probably have our invitation right

Or we could dive into the wife’s role in marriage

The helper

Genesis 2:18 NASB95

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

God put man in charge while in the garden

And then God saw that he needed some help

So God made a women to help the man

To the wife you are to a helper for your husbands

That doesn’t mean you get to help him by leading for him

That doesn’t mean you get to help by always harming on him

To by telling him all the time how he is doing it wrong

To be a helpmate is to do just that to help him lead the family

To follow his lead which means to sometimes not doing what you think you should be doing but to follow his lead

Because church the husband is supposed to be leading

And church the wife is to be the helper in the home

This wasn’t a wedding ceremony

And yesterday they didn’t get the sermon on marriage

This morning we looked at the blue print for the marriage

The it is one man and one women

That divorce is not an option

Marriage requires work

Husbands are the leaders

Wives are the helpers

And through it all God designed it all

Marriage is only complete and success when Jesus is the head of your marriage

Sure you can be married without Jesus and you can stay married without Jesus according to the world

But for it to truly be fulfilled and to be successful you must have Jesus at the center of your marriage

So this morning as we move to our time of invitation

This is an invitation to meet with Jesus this morning

If you are here and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus I would invite you to the front to speak with someone and they can show you in scripture how Jesus died for your sins an dhow to accept that free gift of what Jesus did for you

You are to repent and trust in Jesus

Or maybe you are here this morning and do have a personal relationship with Jesus and are married and your marriage is struggling

I would invite you to the front

Or maybe you husband are not leading or you wife are not helping

Or maybe you simply need to spend sometime at the altar in prayer
