Revelation 21:9-21 - The Dazzling City
Revelation 21:9-21 - The Dazzling City
9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
9 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying
“Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
7 Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
8 it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,
The great city of Jerusalem is entirely contrasted to the city of Babylon
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain
2 In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel, and set me down on a very high mountain, on which was a structure like a city to the south. 3 When he brought me there, behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord and a measuring reed in his hand. And he was standing in the gateway.
The fourth vision cycle
And showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God
John is told he will see the Bride of the Lamb, yet sees a city - Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven
The language contrasts Babylon and New Jerusalem
A Christian in the holy assemblies and in his reading, learning, prayer, conference is laying up for everlasting, when the worldling in the market, in the field, or shop is making provision for a few days or hours. Thou gloriest in thy riches and preeminence now, but how long wilt thou do so?
⬩ RICHARD BAXTER
New Jerusalem is both a people AND a place
The eternal resting place for the saints is a gift given by God Himself
This is the city the saints have been waiting for
9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering,
14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.
11 Having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.
This all points to the presence of God being with the covenant people of God
12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.

12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates
The city of God will be protected from all that would seek to destroy her
7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them,
And at the gates twelve angels
24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
Just as Eden was protected by cherubim, so will the New Jerusalem (Eschatological Eden)
And on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed—
13 On the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.
30 “These shall be the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, 31 three gates, the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel. 32 On the east side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. 33 On the south side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, three gates, the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. 34 On the west side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali.
All of the OT covenant people of God are included in New Jerusalem - they shall dwell with God forever protected!
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations
And on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Jesus selected 12 apostles and they formed the foundation of the New Israel - the Church
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
The city is full of the total covenant people of God - Those in the OT represented by the 12 tribes and those in the NT represented by the 12 apostles
Together they are one, united people of God - there is not TWO peoples in God’s kingdom
15 And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls.
15 And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls.
3 When he brought me there, behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord and a measuring reed in his hand. And he was standing in the gateway.
16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal.
16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal.
The city is a perfect cube - not literally
This represents the completion and perfection of the city where God dwells
20 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high, and he overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid an altar of cedar.
17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel’s measurement.
17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel’s measurement.
18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass.
18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass.
John continues to try to describe the wonderful reality that he sees in this vision
19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel.
19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
The Messiah will bring into existence His people leading to a new redeemed world
8 it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.

The foundations of the wall are adorned with beauty
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Revelation 21:22-27 - God and Humanity Dwell Together in Perfection
Revelation 21:22-27 - God and Humanity Dwell Together in Perfection
22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.
22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.
22 And I saw no temple in the city
For its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.
The temple was the place God’s presence resided - especially in the Holy of Holies
Now, a temple is not needed because sin does not separate God from His people - He is finally WITH them
Also, the Lamb is equally God
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
19 The sun shall be no more
your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
give you light;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it
This is not speaking to astrology, but to the radiating light of God’s splendor being with His people
For the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
3 And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.
24 By its light will the nations walk
And the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it
Nothing good and beautiful in old creation will be lost in new creation - instead it will be purified/perfected as it comes into new creation
25 And its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
11 Your gates shall be open continually;
day and night they shall not be shut,
that people may bring to you the wealth of the nations,
with their kings led in procession.
There are no more enemies, those in New Jerusalem are safe from the dragon, the beast, the false prophet, the earthly kings/armies, and from sin
None of the enemies of God will ever have the chance to bring evil into the holy city of God
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.
26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.
AGAIN ,Nothing good and beautiful in old creation will be lost in new creation - instead it will be purified/perfected as it comes into new creation
27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
3 And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who has been recorded for life in Jerusalem,
27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false
But only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
