Seven Deadly Sins / 7-7 / Gluttony
November is here!! = Thanksgiving / Fellowship Meal Today…
Proverbs 23:1–3 ESV
1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you, 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. 3 Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
Easton’s Bible Dictionary (Glutton)
Heb. zol-el, from a word meaning “to shake out,” “to squander;” and hence one who is prodigal, who wastes his means by indulgence. In Prov. 23:21, the word means debauchees or wasters of their own body.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapters 15–31 (5. Saying 16 (23:19–21))
By itself zōl-ēl denotes a profligate, who makes light of anything that is precious and so squanders it.
We glut ourselves on :
Technology / Gadgets / Accessories
Entertainment / Movies / Sports / Music / TV / Social Media
Relationships / News / Politics
Comfort & Amenities
Food / Drink
We squander and waste:
Talents / Finances / Intelligence / Opportunities
Time / Spiritual Power
More than our waste-line
More than our glycemic index
More than mere food consumption …
Most could eat less
Most could stand to lose weight
Most could exercise more
Much more and deeper than our rumbly grumbly pooh bear tumbly bellies
PRAYER
God our Father in Heaven, we ask that you would be glorified by this meeting today, by this message today, by this meal today. Let us come to you in repentance of our self-indulgent squandering hearts and spiritually feast upon your Word, your goodness and your gospel of life. Have your way with us we pray.

Message

The Character of Gluttony

Root
Philippians 3:19 ESV
19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
Gluttony is Unquenchable
Insatiable - never satisfied
Proverbs 27:20 ESV
20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, and never satisfied are the eyes of man.
Proverbs 30:15 ESV
15 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give. Three things are never satisfied; four never say, “Enough”:
Sin = unquenchable
Christ Satisfies
Gluttony is Unrestrained
Indulgent - lacks restraint
1 Timothy 5:6 ESV
6 but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.
1 John 2:15 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Fruit of the Spirit = Self Control
Maybe the biggest sin in Americans today !!
Gluttony is a Usurper
Intoxicating - carries us away
Esther 2:6 ESV
6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem among the captives carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away.
Proverbs 23:31 ESV
31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
James 1:14–15 ESV
14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Sin = is a tyrant… A slave trader !!

The Consumption of Gluttony

Reality
Aaron and Israel making the Golden Calf Ex 32.2-6.
Exodus 32:5–6 “5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”
King Belshazzar and The Writing on The Wall Da 5.
Daniel 5:1 “1 King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.”
Rich Man and Lazarus Luke 16:19–31.
Luke 16:19–21 “19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.”
The Prodigal Son Luke 15:11–32.
Luke 15:13–14 “13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.”
Gluttony leads to Squandering
prof-li-gate
James 1:17 ESV
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
1 Peter 4:10 ESV
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
Proverbs 28:7 ESV
7 The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.
Gluttony leads to Scarcity
poverty
Proverbs 23:21 ESV
21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.
Matt 25:14-30 = Parable of Ten Talents - miss-managed the masters gift and therefore had nothing in the end…
Gluttony leads to Sickness
poisoning - body, mind, and soul !
Gluttony will have a dramatic effect upon your health. You will bring harm to your body which will eventually catch up to you.
America is the fattest nation in the world w/ 3 in 4 Americans considered overweight. 75% of us are overweight and out of shape. Diabetes has become the fastest growing disease in America. Some 1 million people will succumb to food related diseases to the heart and blood vessels this year.
According to the American Cancer Association a person who is overweight is just as likely to have cancer as a person who smokes.
Many more perish by intemperance than by violence. Intemperance is the source and nurse of all diseases. More perish by surfeiting than by suffering. Every intemperate person digs his own grave with his own mouth and teeth, and is certainly a self-tormentor, a self-destroyer, a self-murderer.
Thomas Brooks
Gluttony is not just a sickness of the body it is a sickness of the soul !!

The Cure of Gluttony

Remedy
Philippians 3:18–21 ESV
18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Psalm 34:8 ESV
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Evaluate your habits
Ecclesiastes 2:24 ESV
24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,
1 Corinthians 6:12–13 ESV
12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
Be Accountable to God and others
1 Corinthians 10:30–31 ESV
30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? 31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
James 5:16 ESV
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Train your body, mind, and spirit
1 Timothy 4:7–8 ESV
7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Romans 12:1 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Matthew 6:16 ESV
16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
Self-Control / Self-Discipline
Galatians 5:22–24 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
We are being transformed and conformed into the image of Christ.
2 Peter 1:5–9 ESV
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
We are service ready for ministry work.
1 Corinthians 9:23–27 ESV
23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
Our testimony is clear and our worship is unhindered.
1 Corinthians 1:4–9 ESV
4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Close

The only way out of Gluttony of the flesh is to build up our spiritual appetites. We must taste and see that the Lord is good, he prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies and he feeds us with his very body and blood. He invites us to come and will one day eat with us at the marriage feast of the Lamb. Come to Him all who are hungry and find your fill come to him all who thirst and be quenched. Let us all repent from the sin of spiritual squandering and instead feast on the faithfulness of the father!
PRAYER
God our Father in Heaven we pray that you might bring us back to you. help us steward that which you have given to us and not waste it foolishly or selfishly. give us eyes to see where this message be applied in our lives. All glory and power and honor be yours our great God and father. Amen

Communion
1 Cor 11.26-31 “26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.”
