Text - 1 Kings 19.13-18
Background
What is a “complex”
b (1): a group of repressed desires and memories that exerts a dominating influence upon the personality
(2): an exaggerated reaction to or preoccupation with a subject or situation
What is an “Elijah complex”
Elijah’s overreaction to his situation -
he wanted to die when he heard that Jezebel was hunting him after the mount Carmel victory
Note that Elijah had a big task before him
even then, God gave him a great victory at mount Carmel
still, he thought the task was bigger, bigger perhaps than God could handle or solve
he must have thought he was at the end of his road
he must have thought he has done all that can be done and nothing worked
he must have thought all of Israel was lost
Do we have an Elijah complex?
Main Subject
We know we have an Elijah complex -
when we feel we have done all that can be done and it’s over
when we want to run away from our problems and ask God to take us home!
we want to pack up and return to the province - instead of asking God what was the right thing to do
when we judge our work as worthless because the oppositions are arising, or because things are not going the way we expected them to happen
we give up on our service, we stop attending because we have too much problem and we are ashamed to admit our failures
we give up the relationship because it seems we cannot reconcile our indifferences
Sermon Points
God’s response to Elijah’s cry should also help us get over with our own Elijah complex!
God said - “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus...”
1 Kings 19.15 “15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria.”
God was saying -
Elijah, I - not you - will determine when and how your work ends!
Our Elijah complex paints our every failure as the “end of the road”
Our Elijah complex teaches us that the solution to our dilemma is to “walk away”
Examples -
Moses - Exodus 2.11-15
Moses must have thought God’s purpose in his life was dead.
Samson - blind and in prison
he must have thought he will spend the rest of his days in prison
WHAT’S THE POINT?
DON’T GIVE UP THE FIGHT - IT’S NOT OVER UNTIL GOD SAYS IT’S OVER!
YOUR FAILURE IS NOT THE END OF GOD’S WORK IN YOUR LIFE
God said - “…when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria… anoint Jehu as king over Israel…anoint Elisha as prophet in your place...”
1 Kings 19.16-17 “16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel.
And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
17 It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.”
God was saying -
Elijah, I - not you - will determine how the battle will be fought and won
God’s fight with Baal
God was fighting for His glory among His own people -
Baal has been introduced and the Israelites were either forced or deceived into worship the baal deities
Round 1 - the drought
God inspired Elijah to prophecy a drought -
that prophecy was God’s declaration of His superiority over Baal
Baal was Canaanite deity of stor and a bringer of rain
Round 2 - the mount Carmel showdown
Baal’s deities were put to shame and later killed
Rain return not by the power of Baal, but by the name of the LORD!
Round 3 - through 3 anointed ones
Elijah was to anoint 3 men who will finish the fight and gain decisive victory
Elijah anointed Elisha
Elisha anointed Hazael
God punished Israel through Hazael
Elisha anointed Jehu through one of the prophets
Jehu killed Jezebel and fed her to dogs
God uLtimately won against Baal and Jezebel
WHAT’S THE POINT?
DON’T GIVE UP YOUR FIGHT BECAUSE GOD IS FIGHTING A BATTLE THROUGH YOU
LET GOD DECIDE HOW THE BATTLE IS WON!
God said - “ yet I have reserved 7000 in Israel who have not bowed the knee to Baal, nor kissed him.”
1 Kings 19.18 “18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.””
God was saying -
Elijah, I - not you - will determine who will be left when the battle is over!
Elijah’s overreaction would have left Jezebel alive and her baal religion propering
But God killed Jezebel in the end and baalim slowly died after that
What was left were men and women who did not bow down to Baal!
Note - Paul used this narrative to given an analogy of his time -
God blinded/hardened the hearts of Israel - except for those who were reserved and ordained to receive the gospel of salvation.
WHAT’S THE POINT?
DON’T GIVE UP THE FIGHT BECAUSE GOD IS FIGHTING A BATTLE THROUGH YOUR LIFE -
HE IS DESTROYING THE WORKS OF THE ENEMY
HE IS RAISING UP HIS “REMNANT” THROUGH YOUR LIFE’S TESTIMONY!
Conclusion
God wants us to continue and press on in our battles
ONLY THE DEVIL wants for you to give up!
Even when we are at the end of our time, the battle will continue through those will come after us, until the work is finished as God wants it!
LET’S ALL GET RID OF OUR ELIJAH REASONINGS!
don’t look at your “jezebels”
look at your “baal’s prophets shamed and killed”
don’t run away from your jezebels - rest but don’t run
don’t hide in your caves
don’t make God’s presence a hiding place for the cowards!
God’s presence is a resting place for the tired warriors who are willing to continue the fight!
