Jesus sees the sinner and offers to make him whole. Sin is the cause of the man's affliction. Jesus performs this healing on the Sabbath. The man is accused of breaking the Sabbath and pushes the blame to the one that healed him. Jesus takes on the Jews regarding doing good works on the Sabbath and claiming to be equal with God.

The Bethesdan pool

A pool near the Sheep Gate that supposedly had healing powers. (vv. 2-4)
A man who had been infirmed for thirty-eight years lay at the pool. (Not born this way, but became this way). (v. 5)
Jesus sees the man and approaches him. Jesus does not force Himself on the man. (The man does not seek out Jesus). (v. 6)

Jesus offers to make the man whole

The man does not see Jesus as a healer. He makes excuses about why he has not been able to take advantage of the pool’s healing properties. (v. 7)
Jesus does not heal the man of his infirmity (a case of semantics). (vv. 8-9)
The soul is more important than the body. (Because it is eternal). (Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”)

The man blames Jesus when accused of breaking the Sabbath laws

The man receives healing, but does not know Jesus’ name. (vv. 9-13)
He says he was made whole, but he probably just believes that he has been healed of his infirmity.
He learns Jesus’ name and reports back to the authorities. (vv. 14-15)
He never once thanks Jesus and probably does not realize that he has been forgiven of his sins as well as having been healed.

The Jews seek to slay Jesus

They accuse Jesus of breaking the Sabbath. (vv. 10-12)
Jesus says He works just like His Father works. (v. 17)
The Jews consider this blasphemy. (v. 18)

The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Jesus launches a powerful defense of Himself. (vv. 19-47)
He gives an extensive description of Himself as the Son of God.

The Six Witnesses of Jesus

Himself (vv. 31-32)
John the Baptist (vv. 33-35)
His works and Miracles (v. 36)
God the Father (vv.37-38)
The Scriptures (vv. 39-40)
Moses (vv. 45-47)

If you don’t believe Scripture; how can you believe in Jesus? (John 5:46-47)

Salvation is offered to Everyone

Jesus does not force Himself on anyone. A person must accept what Jesus accomplished on the cross on their behalf for themselves.
He died on the cross so that everyone who believes in Him can be forgiven of sin and receive everlasting life.
If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus died on a cross for you then you can be saved today.
Then you need to find yourself a New Testament church that preaches the Word of God and make that your home. Get Baptized, take communion regularly, and fellowship with other Christians.
Live your life centered around and founded upon Jesus Christ, our Savior and our God.
