This Week’s Theme: Thankful for Being Used
This Week’s Word is Suffering: The experience of pain or distress, both physical and emotional. Scripture is thoroughly realistic about the place of suffering in the world and in the lives of believers. To become a Christian is not to escape from suffering, but to be able to bear suffering with dignity and hope.
Memory Verse: Romans 5:3 “3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;”
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: The disciples rejoiced after being persecuted
Sermon Proposition: God is calling Christians to rejoice in our sufferings for Christ.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to learn to rejoice in the Lord at all times.
Sermon Text: Acts 5:40-42
Acts 5:40–42 NKJV
40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
INTRODUCTION:
TRANSITION:

I. REJOICED BECAUSE OF THE RESPONSE

Acts 5:19-20; Acts 5:25; Acts 5:29-32;

WITH RESOLVE

LOOK AT VERSE 19-20
Acts 5:19–20 NKJV
19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”
LOOK AT VERSE 25
Acts 5:25 NKJV
25 So one came and told them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”
LOOK AT VERSE 29
Acts 5:29 NKJV
29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.

WITH REALITY

LOOK AT VERSES 30-32
Acts 5:30–32 NKJV
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
Are you rejoicing because of the change God has made in your life?

II. REJOICED BECAUSE OF THE RELEASING

Acts 5:38-39; Acts 5:40;
LOOK AT THE TEXT IN VERSES 38-39.
Acts 5:38–39 NKJV
38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”
LOOK AT VERSE 40.
Acts 5:40 NKJV
40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
Are you rejoicing over the deliverance Christ has provided?

III. REJOICED BECAUSE OF THE REVEALING

Luke 21:12-13; John 16:1-4; Matthew 5:10-12; Acts 5:18; Acts 5:33; Acts 5:40;
LOOK AT WHAT JESUS TOLD THE PEOPLE DURING THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT IN MATTHEW 5:10-12.
Matthew 5:10–12 NKJV
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
HIS DISCIPLES IN LUKE 21:12-13.
Luke 21:12–13 NKJV
12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. 13 But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.
NOW COUPLE THIS WITH JOHN 16:1-4.
John 16:1–4 NKJV
1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. “And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

THE PRISON

Acts 5:18 NKJV
18 and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.

THE PLOTTING

Acts 5:33 NKJV
33 When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.

THE PADDLING

Acts 5:40 NKJV
40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
Are you rejoicing over the fact that hardship is not a surprise to you?

IV. REJOICED BECAUSE OF THE REPRESENTATION

Acts 5:41; John 15:20; Acts 4:13; 2 Corinthians 11:23-25; John 13:14-15; Ephesians 5:2; Philippians 2:5; 1 Peter 3:14, 16; 1 Peter 4:16; 2 Corinthians 11:23-25;
LOOK AT OUR TEXT IN ACT 5:41.
Acts 5:41 NKJV
41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.
LOOK AT WHAT JESUS SAID IN JOHN 15:20.
John 15:20 NKJV
20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
THEY RESEMBLE HIM

RESEMBLE HIM

AFTER PETER AND JOHN HAD HEALED THE MAN AT THE GATE BEAUTIFUL AND WERE CEASED BY THE COUNCIL, THE COUNCIL SAW SOMETHING IN THESE MEN. LOOK AT ACTS 4:13.
Acts 4:13 NKJV
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
MY DADDY SAID, BIRDS OF THE SAME FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. IF YOU WANT TO BE WISE HANG AROUND WISE PEOPLE. THESE MEN SPENT 3 YEARS WITH CHRIST, AND HE HAD RUBBED OFF ON THEM. JESUS EXPECTED HIS FOLLOWERS TO DO WHAT HE DID. Remember Jesus’ instructions to His disciples about serving one another in John 13:14-15.
John 13:14–15 NKJV
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
THIS IS WHY THE SCRIPTURES CALL FOR CHRISTIANS TO IMITATE CHRIST. WHEN IT COMES TO sacrificially LOVING THE BIBLE SAYS IN Ephesians 5:2.
Ephesians 5:2 NKJV
2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
THE BIBLE CALLS FOR US TO SUFFER LOOK AT 1 PETER 2:21.
1 Peter 2:21 NKJV
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
THIS IS WHY Paul CALLED FOR EVERY SAINT TO PHIL 2.5 “5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,”
NOT ONLY DID THEY RESEMBLE CHRIST BUT THE WALKED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS.

RIGHTEOUSNESS

REMEMBER JESUS COMMAND IN MATT 6:33 “33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
DON’T MISS CRUCIAL POINT. PAUL CONFIRMED IN 2 TIMOTHY 3:12
2 Timothy 3:12 NKJV
12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
PETER TAUGHT IN HIS FIRST EPISTLE CHAPTER 3 VERSE 14.
1 Peter 3:14 NKJV
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”
IN VERSE 16, YOU CAN
1 Peter 3:16 NKJV
16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.
1 Peter 4:16 NKJV
16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.
PAUL WAS NOT SHAME
HE TOLD THE CHURCH, IN Galatians 6:17, “. . . I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” Paul EVEN shared his sufferings for Christ as a servant BECAUSE FALSE TEACHERS QUESTIONED HIS STATUS in 2 Corinthians 11:23-25.
2 Corinthians 11:23–25 NKJV
23 Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. 24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;

REJOICE BECAUSE YOU REPRESENTED HIM

YES, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST YOU SHOULD
REJOICE, CELEBRATE, BE HAPPY, BE JOYFUL
YOU SHOULD CHEER AND BE MERRY AND WORSHIP HIM
THERE ISN’T ANYTHING WRONG WITH
REJOICING BECAUSE YOU GAVE THE RIGHT RESPONSE
REJOICING BECAUSE OF THE REVEALING OF THE WORD
BUT HERE THE DISCIPLES WERE PUT IN PRISON, PLOTTED AGAINST, AND WERE PADDLED LIKE BAD CHILDREN BUT WHAT GOT THEM EXCITED IS WHY.
THEY CELEBRATED BECAUSE THEY WERE CONSIDERED IN THE SAME COMPANY WITH CHRIST
REJOICED BECAUSE THEY WERE RESISTED/RIDICULED LIKE HIM
DELIGHTED BECAUSE THEY WERE DISHONORED LIKE CHRIST
JUBILATED BECAUSE THEY WERE JABBED LIKE CHRIST
HAPPY BECAUSE THEY WERE HUMILIATED LIKE CHRIST
CHEERED BECAUSE THEY WERE CONFINED LIKE CHRIST
WORSHIPPED BECAUSE THEY WERE WHUPPED LIKE CHRIST
MERRY BECAUSE THEY WERE MISTREATED LIKE CHRIST
