It is good to engage in theology – the study of God and his mighty deeds. But it is not good to engage only with our heads, and not our hearts. To turn theology into a cold, systematic science, rather than a warm, intimate relationship. Psalm 139 displays an amazing balance of affirming God’s attributes, but in a personal, intimate way. It takes the epic realities of his omniscience (knowing everything), omnipresence (being everywhere), and omnipotence (having all power) and presses them firmly on our hearts, both by threatening our autonomy and comforting our fears.
