The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
INTRODUCTION: This chapter reminds us that the world is moving swiftly toward the end of time.
As long as the old age lasts, the night continues. But the turning point has come, with Christ.
“The dayspring from on high hath visited us”.
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
The night continues of course, but it moves swiftly toward the daybreak.
Those who are Christ’s belong no longer to the night; they are men of the morning, for they have seen the breaking of God’s new day.
The apostle now insists that our moral life must conform to the fact that we are the children of the day:
Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
Elsewhere, the works of darkness are called “the works of the flesh” (Gal. 5:19–21).
Paul list is given: rioting (“carousing,” and drunkenness, chambering (“sexual sleeping around,”) and wantonness (“extreme indulgence in sensual pleasures,” strife and envy (13).
All these belong to the night.
In place of these we must put on the armour of light.
Therefore we should “seek the Lord while he may be found”
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
This text warns us that it is later than we think.
“The night is far spent.”
There is just enough time to give our lives to Christ and serve Him a little while.
“The time is short”
But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
Time, itself, is not so short, but the time each person has left to prepare to meet his Master is short.
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
“IT IS HIGH TIME TO WAKE OUT OF SLEEP”
1. “Make your calling and election sure,”
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
2. “Set your affections on things above,”
4. Don’t press your luck too far with sin.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
5. Don’t press your luck with mere profession.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
6. Don’t press your luck by thinking there is plenty of time. “Thou fool, this night …”
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
IMMEDIATE DECISION FOR CHRIST SHOULD BE MADE. LIKE—
1. Matthew, who “arose, and followed him,”
And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
2. Peter and Andrew, who followed “straightway,”
And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
3. The prodigal, who “arose, and came to his father,” Luke 15:20.
4. The eunuch, who said, “Here is water; what doth hinder …?”
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
5. Zacchaeus, who “made haste … and received him,”
And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
Are You One Who Say:
1. Going to put God first in your life—begin now!
2. Going to be more loyal to worship—begin today!
3. Going to be more trustworthy—start today!
4. Going to give more time to God’s Word—begin now!
5. Going to give more time to prayer—don’t put it off!
6. Going to give more time to soul-winning—begin today!
7. Going to rededicate your life to Christ—Do it now!
8. Going to accept Christ as your Savior—Do it now!
“THE NIGHT IS FAR SPENT, THE DAY IS AT HAND.”
