1) What is day about?
1 Samuel 14. The amazing WHAT IF story about Jonathan and the Philistines. This story has always intrigued me and totally fascinated my thoughts toward the aggressive nature of ministry. While we may not be facing/fighting Philistines today, we are still held fast in the battle of our souls and those around us. Without the determined mindset of people who will take on this mentality of determination and resilience, we may lose ground when it comes to help as many as possible find and follow Jesus.
I see the determination to share the gospel all throughout this story and would seek to encourage our church to do everything they can to get the message of Jesus into as many hands and hearts as possible.
We must become ever more aggressive about our witness. The culture around us is inventing more religions today faster than we can keep us and they do so just to pacify the lustful thirst of the population that demands something for everyone. A have-it-your-way gospel, tailored and fit for every consumer regardless of orientation of color. THERE IS NO HOPE IN THOSE GOSPELS! And while for a short term, they will offer camaraderie, they will always leave followers empty and angry.
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION FOR THE TRUTHFUL MESSAGE OF THE HOPE OF JESUS.
2) Why is this day important?
We’ve lost our ability to be aggressive about church/Jesus/the gospel. We may have never had it. Some have never seen it at all.
David said in Psalm 69:9, “Zeal for my house consumes me”. The disciples remembered that statement somehow when Jesus portrayed an anger and frustration about money changers who had made his house into a money making, comfortable, efficiency business. John 2:17
We need to allow that same Zeal to consume us. There is far too much indifference happening when it comes to the purity of the gospel in our culture today .
3) What do i want them to do?
Get excited about Jesus and those hearing/knowing/accepting the message of the cross.
We need to allow this message to fully infiltrate our hearts so we can walk forward with boldness, confidence, determination as Jonathan did that day but with the message of the cross.
