BE STILL/PRAY
SHAME AND GUILT
Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
The fact that this woman is coming to gather water in the hottest part of the day brings us to the conclusion that she did not feel comfortable with being seen during the times they normally gathered water. Many scholars believe that this woman felt a lot of guilt and shame.
Jesus’ encounter is not normal. In this culture, men did not address women as seen in verse 27. The initiation of conversation shows us that there was something that needed addressed in this woman’s life. There was a reason that this encounter happened.
JESUS DESIRES AN ENCOUNTER WITH YOU
The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
JEWISH PEOPLE HATED SAMARITANS. NOT ONLY WAS SHE A SAMARITAN, BUT ALSO A WOMAN. THIS WOULD HAVE GIVEN JESUS NO REASON TO TALK TO HER.
YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY CULTURAL CONSTRUCTS, YOUR DEFINED BY CHRIST
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
GIFT- (dōrea)- ONLY REFERENCED ONCE IN ALL 4 GOSPELS, BUT TALKED ABOUT 4 TIMES IN THE BOOK OF ACTS IN RELATION TO THE GIVING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
LIVING WATER-TERM REFERRED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AS THE HOLY SPIRIT.
“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
LITTLE DID SHE KNOW THAT SHE WAS ABOUT TO UNDERSTAND WHO JESUS WAS AND WHAT HE WAS GETTING READY TO DO WITHIN HER LIFE.
JESUS SIDESTEPS THE QUESTION
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
JESUS WAS EXPLAINING THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS THE “LIVING WATER” THAT HE WANTED TO GIVE TO HER. THE TERM WELLING UP IS A TERM USED TO DESCRIBE THE ACTIVITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. THIS IS TO SHOW THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ACTIVE TO THOSE WHO RECEIVE IT. WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE HOLY SPIRIT. WE HAVE TO CHOOSE TO ACCEPT AND RECEIVE IT.
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
SHE IS INTERESTED, AND SHE STILL DOESN’T UNDERSTAND.
He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
SCHOLARS BELIEVE THAT THIS WOMAN WAS EITHER MARRIED 5 TIMES, OR THE RELATIONSHIPS SHE WAS IN WERE ADULTEROUS. BUT ONE THING THAT WE CAN CONCLUDE IS THAT THE WOMAN WAS LOOKING FOR DEEP, MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS IN ALL THE WRONG PLACED. JESUS WAS NOT INTENDING GUILT, BUT WAS CONFRONTING THE FACT THAT HE WAS THAT RELATIONSHIP SHE WAS LOOKING FOR.
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
JESUS WAS FORESHADOWING THE FACT THAT SOON IT WOULD NOT MATTER WHERE YOU WORSHIP, BECAUSE....
WORSHIP BELONGS TO ALL!
The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT OF ALL YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!
