ME/WE- Total depravity.

Jeremiah 17:1-9 NIV - God telling Jeremiah to direct some very pointed thoughts toward his people about the condition of their hearts.

ScreenThe crux of the whole matter- The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Man’s basic premise is we start good and can go bad

Rotting Fruit- it starts good and goes bad

The tension in question becomes, do we primarily start off good and become bad or are some born bad and some good?
When we start with a basis of our own righteousness, or in this regard, our own goodness, how do we interpret the resulting badness?
Think about it this way. When we do something wrong, we have to ask for forgiveness. We have to humble ourselves and seek restitution for the failure we created.
When we receive some sort of discipline, we need to immediately do a better job.
We need to try harder to not do that thing anymore.
If we are basically good, than we shouldn’t ever had to try harder to stay away from evil?

The premise is this, when left to ourselves, we will always return to our natural state.

Sleep. Lethargic. It’s the outside forces that drive us and direct us to better, to holy, to purity, to discipline.

When we are left to our own devices, to our own purposes, we resort back to the person we started out as.

Slide Without the vibrancy of the Spirit of God at work in your heart, you will always resort back to the evil that you started out as.

<<Keys Beginning>>

Before Christ, in the condition we were born into, we may have been physically alive, but we are completely, spiritually dead. There was nothing in us, there was nothing that was going to produce anything of goodness or spiritual vitality through us. It was all dead, and nothing live.
But then Jesus.
But then Jesus. Can someone say, but then Jesus.
You see, we’ve got to understand we were in total and complete darkness, completely lost in our sin, which we were born into. It’s not something you chose at some point in your life, you were a standby victim.

Slide- Eph. 2:4-9 NIV

Close: God I recognize the evil that I am. I am a sinner. I am not a mistaker, I am a sinner and without you God, I will always resort to evil that is inside of me. The only reason there is good in the world or coming out of me, is the Holy Spirit that is moving, active in the people he indwells, apart from him everything is evil. It’s not a that I do good, it that the God who lives in me is good and directs me into goodness.
