The Spoken Word Of Christ
Preaching involves the proclamation of God’s word to a gathered people. God spoke his word (2 Tim 3:16) such that it could be recorded and subsequently read, studied, applied, and spoken to others. Thus, preachers must steward and herald God’s word in such a way that people encounter God by means of his word (1 Sam 3:21). Therefore, preaching involves interpreting, explaining, applying, and exulting over God’s word, in the power of the Spirit, to the glory of God. Preaching, by virtue of its very nature, requires interpretation of the Bible. In both Testaments the terms used to denote preaching have the essential element of proclamation or announcing. The preacher is one who tells forth the message which has been received from God. As such, one must read and must appropriate hermeneutical tools to rightly understand the meaning of what is there.
