INTRODUCTION:
Words are powerful. Whoever came up with the phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was clever, but wrong.
The Tongue and the words that it produces have the power to hurt deeply.
Someone has said: “ The tongue cuts where the teeth cannot bite. The teeth cannot get at the heart, but the tongue can. Moreover, the tongue bites miles away, and the teeth must be near. What awful words a cruel tongue can inflict, and yet, who can protect himself from it?”
Words are extremely important, so important in fact that Jesus said they have the power to determine a mans destiny.
37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Our words either bless God or curse God, bless man or curse man.
Scripture calls the tongue “a world of iniquity” a “fire” and “an unholy evil, full of deadly poison.
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
Jesus said it this way in
11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
There is a terrible responsibility placed upon man and the words that he speaks.
Why? Because Words Matter.
Now, lets look at tonights text together.
I.)Blasphemous words against the Holy Ghost are unforgiven. (v.31-32)
I.)Blasphemous words against the Holy Ghost are unforgiven. (v.31-32)
It is a tongue-sin that is unpardonable.
This fact alone points to the seriousness of all tongue-sins
A.) The warning
Christ gave this warning to strike fear in the hearts of those about to commit the unpardonable sin and to stir a holy reverence and repentance toward God.
All sin is forgiven accept this one sin (v 31)
-even sins against Christ are forgiven
But the unpardonable sin, which is the stubborn rejection, refusal and obstinate unbelief in and of the Lord, is not forgiven.
At the judgment seat that person will stand before a holy God guilty and unpardonable
29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”—
36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
II.) Words will either confess or deny Christ. (v 33)
II.) Words will either confess or deny Christ. (v 33)
Christ is making a demand here, make a decision. Either Im the savior or a liar. I’m good or I’m bad. Christ is know by His fruit. There is no neutrality or middle ground, so quit playing the hypocrite and being half hearted about Him, either confess me or deny me.
Let your words speak for me or against me.
13 “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.
III.) Words expose the heart (v 34-35)
III.) Words expose the heart (v 34-35)
The man either has the heart of a viper (v34) the heart of a goodman (v 35) or the heart of an evil man. (v 35)
Words come out of an over flowing heart.
“out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”
Your words expose:
-your true nature
-what is deep within your heart. Motives, desires, ambitions.
-Your true character (good, bad, kind, cruel)
-What you think (pure or perverse, dirty or clean)
-Your spirit. What you believe and pursue.
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
A reformation of the mouth, can and will only come if there is a transformation of the heart.
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
IV.) All of our idle words will be counted for on the day of judgement (v 36)
IV.) All of our idle words will be counted for on the day of judgement (v 36)
God hears and records every word that we speak
4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
-unprofitable words make and show us to be unprofitable servants
-Idle words must be confessed to God and mercy requested for them.
-scripture flows with charge after charge to govern the tongue
9 For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or by speeches with which he can do no good?
V.) Words determine a mans destiny. (v 37)
V.) Words determine a mans destiny. (v 37)
Either they will justify or condemn us.
You’re judged to be either guilty or not guilty by your testimony.
10 For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.
3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; Yes, your own lips testify against you.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
Go to James 1:26
26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.
Two things are said about someone with an out of control tongue.
1.) His religions useless (false, empty, lie, hypocritical)
2.) He deceives his own heart.
So, as you can see, the things we say matter and have not only earthly consequence, but eternal consequence.
