Genesis 16:1-3; 18:14
Introduction:
(Song Clip / Video of Alabama singing “I’m in a Hurry”)
· How many of us can relate to that verse?
· We can be impatient people at times.
o Impatient for a call or text back
o Impatient for our food to be brought to our table
o Impatient for our car to be fixed
· We can be impatient in a lot of things, but we also can get impatient with God. Especially, when there is something we want to see happen or get done.
· Let me tell you something about God, he isn’t in a hurry. We are in a hurry but God isn’t.
· Now, here is where we get ourselves into trouble, when we try to run ahead of God.
· I want you to see a couple in the scripture who did just that, tried to get ahead of God’s plan for their life.
[Read Scripture]
· When you hear the names Abraham and Sarah, the reaction commonly associated with them is, here are people of faith. They left their home, their family, and went out at the Lord’s command.
· But even these two individuals got ahead of God and when they got ahead, it caused problems.
· God had promised them a descendant, a child, but in their eyes, time was running out, and so they felt the need to go ahead and initiate the promise.
· Let’s be honest, it is easy to feel that way at times when it comes to God. But what we have to remember is this God works on his time.
· Now there are some things that we need to remember when it comes to timing and God.
God has a Designated Time
· Genesis 18:14 “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
· God had an appointed time for this family.
· I know it can be hard to wait for God’s moving in our life, maybe you are waiting and waiting and you are wondering if it is ever going to happen.
o Waiting to find love
o Waiting to have a child
o Waiting to hear from a school or for a job
· The longer we wait, the more we begin to second guess things. And then it is easy to jump ahead of God’s plan in our life.
· God had promised a son, but being up in years, this couple thought it was better to run ahead of God and take things into their own hands.
· Listen, nothing good happens when you take it out of the hands of the Lord.
· God had a designated time for this couple, and listen, no matter what it is, God has a designated time for you as well.
· My Eye Doctor visit (illustration), I got there early, but they had a designated time for me, I had to wait until it was my time. I didn’t like it, but it was just the fact of the matter.
· Don’t get angry with God, when he hasn’t delivered an answer to a situation you are facing, he has a designated time.
God has a Designed Time
· So we see that God has a designated time, but God has a designed time.
· Let me ask you a question, are you a patient person? I will tell you how patient you are, by how long you are willing to be on hold with customer service.
· The average person can stand 9 minutes of being on hold.
· It is difficult to wait. We want things to happen quickly.
o We try grow up to quick
o We rush to start a family
o We accept the first offer that comes our way
o We buy something before we really should have.
· And that holds true when it comes to God. We have to learn to wait for Jesus and his timing.
· (illustration) Mary, Martha, and Lazarus – Jesus waited four days. He was really only a day away, and could have been there before he died.
· Now God had a designed time, so that those around could see the hand of God move.
· Just like Abraham and Sarah had to wait for their son to be born, God is working behind the scenes to sort out all the details.
· What we need to do is learn to wait on God.
· Psalm 37:34 “Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land…”
· What did God tell us to do? He told us to wait.
· Let me ask you, what is better? A frozen dinner that you pop in the microwave for 2-4 minutes or a home cooked meal that grandma took the time to prepare and cook?
· When we learn to wait for Jesus, we will see the best in our life.
· You see friend, God is designing out the answer for you. He will give it in his time, not our time.
· Yeah, God could have given Abraham and Sarah a child from the start, but that wasn’t his design. When they learn to wait, they saw a miracle, they saw what God intended.
God has a Desired Time
· Now God has a Designed Time, but God also has a Desired Time.
· When it comes to God, we should not keep him waiting.
· (illustration) I have laid out a fun schedule, we are going to have
o Delicious meal
o A guided tour at an art museum
o A horse drawn carriage ride
o A homemade ice cream dessert
o Followed up with firework show
o You are there to pick them up, but they keep you waiting, maybe they are not dressed, or they want to finish listening to a song or finish watching a television show. What does that mean for your schedule? It means you have to scratch something off the list.
· Each time we make God wait, we are loosing something more wonderful in our life.
· 2 Corinthians 6:2 “For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
· Listen, God’s desire is that you let him in to your heart, don’t be a person who keeps God waiting.
· Don’t be a person who hears Jesus knocking at the door but doesn’t get up to go an answer it.
Conclusion
· You know we are in a hurry on so many things, but not in a hurry about coming to Jesus.
· Listen, God has an appointed time for your life, and maybe that appointed time for you is too come and get saved.
· Friend when you get ahead of God’s plan you are bringing trouble into your life.
· Maybe it is to come and rededicate.
· Maybe it is to come and pray for patience.
· Whatever it is, don’t get ahead of God.
