Excuses Before God?
Excuses Before God?
2 weeks ago we talked about Romans 1:18-23
There we saw how God’s wrath is against all human beings, great and small, old and young, all of us who suppress the truth through our sin.
We suppress the turth about God and the turth about life and sin and the gospel when we live for things other than God, when we love things more that God, when we choose stuff, or people, or pleasure over obedience we lie by our actions in saying these things are better than God and His ways!
God declares that no one has an excuse to not beleive and live in light of who He is because he’s revealed himself in creation.
Vs. 21 to 23 highlight how they don’t honor God but rather they become fools!
in vs. 23 we see the FIRST EXCHANGE that begins a pattern that carries into our vs. tonight!
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
They chose not honor God or give thanks to God so rather than acknowlefge God and his glory they give him up for things of this world. for animals and creeping things.
You can imagine it like this, instead of attesting the power of creation and the world to God, they create gods and worship images, and creation.
Hinduism comes up with 3 gods who rule the world. Brahma: the creator; Vishnu: the preserver and Shiva: the destroyer.
Brahma is the creator god and the god of learning..
They also acknowledge other gods and goddesses…
Ganesh; who has an elephant's head and he is also a son of Shiva and Parvati,
OR Hanuman; who is an ape,
They attriute the creation that speaks of God’s power and nature and say its from these so called gods, and the exchange god’s glory for images and created things!
vs. 24 Paul tells us how God responds to this rebellion:
He gives them up to the lusts of their hearts, to impurity, dishonoring their bodies among themselves.
Eseentiall God gives them up to immorality, to sin. He removes his grace from them.
One element that this reveals to us is that God is the one who keeps up from our sinful desires and actions.
Hebrews 1 tells us that Jesus upholds the universe by the Word of hsi power…
JESUS SUSTAINS THE WORLD
HE SUSTAINS US
HE KEEPS US FROM THE DEPTHS OF OUR SIN…
When man is not held back it looks like SODOM and GOMORRAH
It looks like the JUDGES
so as we reject god he gives us into what we want, sin and immorality.
vs. 25 reiterates the reason God does this is because we exchange the trtuh of God for a lie and we wroship and serve the creature rather than the creator!
vs. 26 turns to now and goes deeper, now God gives them up do dishonorable passions. and Paul explains those passions as homosexual passions that are contrary to nature.
What Paul DOESN’T MEAN
What Paul DOESN’T MEAN
NOT A HEIGHTENING OF SIN (a rebellion against our created order/being)
NOT A SPECIAL INDICTMENT (he builds on it to include many other sins in vs. 29-31)
What PAUL DOES MEAN
What PAUL DOES MEAN
Homosexuality is sin (he uses the words for male and female that are used in Genesis reminding us of our created order and purpose)
This is based on Created Order not cultural issues (Eternally true)
Our physical bodies prove this.
What we have to take into account:
What we have to take into account:
Homosexual sin and heterosexual sin are equally sinful and punishable by the wrath of God!
Lust in marriage, in teens, in anyone is evil and wrong. BECAUSE it’s self seeking and using God’s creation, people made in his image, to satisfy our personal desires.
Real love is seen in sacrificial service
EXAMPLE OF CHRIST
NO MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN
Sr. High only: LOVE DOES NOT MEAN PHYSICAL INTIMACY!!
From here Paul again reminds us that they don’t acknowledge God in vs. 28.
So God gives them up to a debased mind, a mind emptied of his grace.
This mind leads them to do things that ought not to be done.
Paul catalogues what that is in vs. 29-31
29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
Vs. 32 goes on to summarize the rebellion of man against God and his ways:
32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
What is the main point these verses teach?
What is the main point these verses teach?
Rebellion Against God Escalates our Sin and Leads to Greater Sin and Suffering
Rebellion Against God Escalates our Sin and Leads to Greater Sin and Suffering
As we reject who God is, we move toward our own ideas, thoughts, and immoral pursuits. When we have no objective truth then anthing can be true. If our bodies aren’t created for a purpose and reason then they can be for whatever we want!
We Are Responsible To Respond to the Revelation of God We Have By Acknowledging God, Worshipping and Serving Him!
We Are Responsible To Respond to the Revelation of God We Have By Acknowledging God, Worshipping and Serving Him!
Where does this Leave us? All of us are under his wrath, deserving punishment. All of us Need Christ!
Where does this Leave us? All of us are under his wrath, deserving punishment. All of us Need Christ!
We all fit somewhere into the list of Romans 1:29-31 “29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.”
How should we respond? By Repenting and Looking to Christ to Forgive us and Cleanse us!
How should we respond? By Repenting and Looking to Christ to Forgive us and Cleanse us!
How do we talk to others about this?
How do we talk to others about this?
Don’t hold them to Christian Standards/Beliefs
Don’t treat their sin worse as if it is worse than your own
Don’t margianalize or malign specific groups or cultures
Do show Christian Standards and Beliefs in your life
Do treat all sin as evil and deserving of God’s just punishment
Do tear down walls and division through kindness and love
