Proverbs 13:1-5
1a A wise son heareth his father’s instruction:
Explanation
Here we see the teachable son
Listening to your father’s instruction makes you wise
Wise children listen to what their dad has to say!
A wise child will stop what they are doing, and open their ears.
Watch for the children in your sunday school class
Illustration
Emma has been starting to say “Mama” and I’ve been trying my hardest to get her to say “Dada!”
But she just won’t do it!
She just shakes her head at me and says, “mamamamama.”
I had to read this verse to her today!
“A wise son heareth his father’s instruction” But she just won’t listen to me!
So I’ve determined that Emma is not yet wise.
Application
If you are a wise son or daughter, you will listen to your father’s instruction
If you are a wise son or daughter of God, you will hear your Father’s instruction (The Bible)
Teach you children to listen.
Watch for children that listen.
-in your sunday school class, in jr.
church.
You might want to spend a bit more effort on these children.
They just might be the next preachers, missionaries, etc..
The truth is, I wish I listened more when I was a child!
I would often tune the preacher out!
1b But a scorner heareth not rebuke.
Explanation
Here we see the unteachable son
A scorner=a mocker, someone who talks arrogantly, a know-it-all
rebuke=to be reprimanded, to be corrected when you are wrong.
An arrogant person will not allow himself to be corrected.
He won’t even hear it!
He will stop up his ears.
ILL: At camp, there was a kid who was not doing what he should be doing, I confronted him and started to kindly rebuke him....he literally put his fingers in his ears and started making noises…he was ignoring me!
“A scorner heareth not rebuke.”
Illustration
When I was working at Native Roots as a teen, we were landscaping a mini golf course and some other areas at Durango Mountain Resort, I was in charge of the project.
One day we left the resort after a long day of work and we my boss got a call from the resort that we had left a mess all over the mini golf course.
When my boss confronted me about this my first response was to become very defensive.
But then I realized that I did make a mistake.
I fessed up, and apologized.
Not long after that he actually gave me a raise.
Application
Be humble enough to hear rebuke.
It’s never fun to be corrected, but at times we all need it.
ILL: Sometimes my wife has to correct me, she’ll pull me aside and say kindly something like, “Was that really the best way to do that?”
As a proud man my first response is always the same: “I know what I’m doing!” or “How dare you try to tell me...” or “You don’t always do things right either!”
But I’m learning… ”A scorner heareth not rebuke.”
BUT....a wise person is wise enough to know....he does not know everything!
A wise person will listen to rebuke.
When the Holy Spirit speaks to you and corrects you, be wise enough, be humble enough, to listen to his voice!
Be teachable!
2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: But the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
In this verse you get to choice what you want to eat.
You can choose to eat good.
Or you can choose to eat violence.
Not a hard choice....it’s like choosing between a McDonald’s burger and Texas Roadhouse burger.
Eating-This is a picture of what you let into your life…into your soul!
2a A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth:
Explanation
If you want to eat good then the key is your words-your speech.
Quote: “Give not thy tongue too much liberty, lest it take thee prisoner.”
Application
You must control your words!
Your speech should be controlled, truthful, pure, and helpful!
“A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth.”
Perfect example of good in, good out…but it’s reversed…good out, good in!
Good fruit out (words), good fruit in.
2b But the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
Explanation
This speaks of someone who uses their words for transgressions.
Their speech is reckless, dangerous, corrupt, and sinful
Their reward is violence.
“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”
And this meal isn’t an option....it’s shoved down their throats.
“You made your bed this way…now sleep in it.”
They have spewed fire out of their mouth, and it comes back to burn themselves.
Words are like a boomarang…they will somehow, someway, for better or worse, make their way back to you.
If you sow violence with your words, you will reap violence.
You’ll notice their “soul” is the thing that does the eating.
It eats violence.
Application
Keep a strong bridle on your tongue, and a strong hand on that bridle.
Keep thy tongue from evil -song.
Quote: “A guard upon the lips is a guard to the soul.”
Your tongue tells your past but it writes your future.
Illustration
As a kid, I had a go kart, A Yerf Dog with a 6.5 horsepower engine.
It had independent front suspension.
It had 2 seats so you could take your best friend for a ride.
It had an awesome little utility rack.
It was pretty sweet but the worst part about it is that it had a speed governor.
It had a top speed of 28 mph.
That always bugged me!
You’d get up to speed and as soon as you got to 28 mph it was like someone hit the breaks!
So I figured out a way to bypass the governor using some wire.
I was finally able to go like 40 mph!
It was all fun and games until I took a corner going too fast and flipped it onto it’s side!
The governor had kept me safe.
