Hot Mess

Week 2: My Schedule is a Hot Mess

Big Idea:

There are many ways to make sure you stay up to date on your daily routine or schedule. However, no amount of fancy technology can help with a schedule that is just too full. This week, we pull from the Bible practical steps you can take when your schedule seems like a hot mess.
Prayer: “Lord, you know my schedule… You know the needs of my life. Please help me manage all that is before me in a healthy way that honors you and reflects you to those around me. Help me step out in faith and trust you for all my life, including the rest.”
Scripture: Genesis 2:2-3; John 5:17; Psalm 84:10; Luke 2:41-49
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)

Introduction

Good morning church. Welcome back to another week of worship. We are continuing our series called, “Hot Mess.” Last week we defined what a hot mess is, but maybe this is a brand new phrase to you. Essentially, this phrase is popular in culture to describe something (or someone) that is out of control.
Chaos is often associated with this phrase. So, in this series, we are talking about parts of our life that fall into this category. Last week, we spent time learning about what to do when our family is a hot mess. Today, we are taking another step in the process, talking about our schedule, which is an area in all of our lives that gets a bit chaotic from time to time.
STORY:
Talk about how you personally keep your schedule up to date and how you manage your time.
The truth is, there is no fancy way or quick fix to deal with a schedule that is just too full. I have lived that life, maybe some of us here today know exactly what that feels like, and it isn’t too appealing. In fact, it’s a mess! The reason we are talking about our schedules today is because the repercussions of a chaotic and full schedule will affect those closest to you. They are the ones most directly impacted by your schedule and your time management/mis-management skills.
What if our discussion today and that of last Sunday were to go hand in hand? I want to share with you a few things the Bible says to help us regain a manageable schedule, rather than one that’s a chaotic hot mess.

Main Teaching

I. Find Sabbath Rest

(Genesis 2 / Mark 2)
If you have a Bible with you today, turn with me to Genesis 2. Last week, we covered the entire book of Genesis (or at least it felt like it), looking at the family system of the patriarchs. Today, I want us to begin with the second chapter in the Bible, because I believe it lays the groundwork for us today. What is the first step we can take toward reevaluating our schedule to make sure we are healthy? Well, quite simply, we must find Sabbath rest.
Read Genesis 2:2-3
Genesis 2:2–3 NKJV
2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Now, if you are new to this whole church thing, this may be a new term for you. God creates the heavens and earth in six days. Then, on the seventh day, the Bible says He rested from all the work He was doing. He rested.
Wait a minute, so did the all-powerful God rest because He got tired? Of course not! In fact, Jesus says these words in John 5:17
Read John 5:17
John 5:17 NKJV
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
But how can this be? There’s this idea in theology called biblical tension. Essentially, when reading the Bible, we must hold two verses like these in tension with one another. When we do, we see God is not resting in Genesis 2 because He is tired from the work He was doing. Instead, He seems to be putting into motion a model for us as humans to follow. He desires for us to become more and more like Him each day.
So, the creator of the entire cosmos shows us what it looks like to take a break from work. He shows us that if He can stop working, then we can too.
But how many of you know there’s a difference between rest and Sabbath rest? And this very well could be the make or break for your schedule today.
STORY: Talk about a time in your life when you struggled to find physical rest. What was going on in your life at the time and how did you fix it or manage it?
Maybe you can relate with this season in my life. Either way, you can get the best sleep you’ve ever had and still feel exhausted. Why? Because you haven’t made time for this Sabbath rest. Sabbath rest looks like pausing from the work you have done the other six days of the week. It means doing something else with your time, working something fun or laid back into your busy schedule. Sabbath rest is an act of faith, which means that it isn’t always easy to do, and it can feel a bit overwhelming.
STORY: Talk about how you personally find Sabbath rest. Which day of the week is it, and what do you normally do? And if this isn’t something you practice, you might talk about that instead…
This type of rest can radically change your life and change your schedule. Stepping out in faith can feel awkward, but we must make faith choices every day. We must choose God over other things. We invest our best in the things of God and He takes care of the rest.

II. Invest in Time With God

(Psalm 84)
ILLUSTRATION: Have two glasses on stage with you. One of them has no water in it, while the other has only a little bit. Make the point that whatever you pour into yourself will be that which you have available to pour out.
I’m not here to just tell you, “You need to read the Bible more.” If that were my point, we would all gain a lot of head knowledge that would never truly sink down into our hearts. Instead, I want to direct you to a single verse in the Psalms, one that can radically reshape the way you think about time invested with God, especially in relation to where it fits in your schedule.
Read Psalm 84:10
We all probably know that there are 365 days in any given year. That means that 1,000 days, as the writer talks about in this verse, is almost exactly 3 years. In 3 years, you could get a masters or doctoral degree. In 3 years, your child can complete middle school. In 3 years, it will almost be time to vote again for our president and other officials. 3 years is a long time. The writer of this Psalm is completely convinced that a single day, one 24-hour period with God, is greater than 1,000 days doing anything else.
So, I need to ask you: more so than an entire day with God, does your day consist of any time with God? Maybe you are sitting here today, and you are at the end of yourself. You’ve tried to figure out why you feel so drained. Your schedule is full, but you are still making time for your family, and maybe even a day off or two throughout the week when you do other things. How could this be?
Like the glasses a moment ago, it’s all about what you and I are pouring into our lives. This rhythm of investment with God must be a daily decision. Maybe it happens when you wake up in the morning. Instead of checking emails, looking at your calendar, or scrolling on Instagram, you first physically get out of bed and walk over to your Bible to have some time just with God. Or maybe this needs to be an evening activity for you. The workday is finished, and prior to going to bed, you want to close off your day the right way.
STORY:
Talk about how this looks for you. This is a helpful way to suggest a certain rhythm for those in your congregation that may not have any idea where to start.
This is just what works for me, but everyone is different. I’m simply advocating that you try something, that you take a step of faith and invest your time in God. In addition to that, there is one more practical step I would offer to you today, one that Jesus shows us even before His public ministry begins.

III. Give God Your Schedule

(Luke 2)
Scholars believe that Jesus was on this earth for about 33 years prior to His death and resurrection. From what the Bible tells us, He spent about 3 of those years working miracles, teaching crowds of people, and healing the sick. The scriptures tell us a little bit about Jesus’ life before any of this was happening. Turn with me to Luke 2.
Read Luke 2:41-49
Luke 2:41–49 NKJV
41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
Did you catch that last statement from Jesus? He had to be in His Father’s house. Another translation says it this way, “I should be involved with my Father’s affairs.” Friends, this truly is the foundational key to taking your schedule from a hot mess to a manageable calendar. Maybe the action step you need to partake in today is very, very simple, yet extremely hard to do: giving God control of your schedule.
This is very hard to do. There are deadlines we must meet, there’s a family we need to care for, there are things that come up at the last minute that just must be done. But before even making a list, making our calendar, crafting our schedule, maybe we begin to lay it down at the feet of Jesus and say, for the first time, “You get to call the shots and make the schedule.” This too is a giant step of faith, but it’s a necessary one if you want to get your chaotic schedule under control and in the hands of God.
If you practice this enough, and if you truly want to change, I trust God will meet you. Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” -Matthew 7:7-8
As you press into Him, your priorities will begin to shift. You will be about your Father’s business. You will intertwine the Gospel message into everything you find yourself doing! People will notice it, your family will notice it, your coworkers will notice it, and we will notice it. You will finally have time for a Sabbath rest each week. You will set aside time each day for investment into God’s Word and build your relationship with Him.
This is how you find peace in the midst of chaos. This is how you get control of an out of control hot mess of a schedule.
You give it all to Him.

Conclusion

I have no idea what this needs to look like for you. I don’t know what you have going on in your life at the moment and I don’t know what may need to change or adjust for you to feel at peace.
I have shared a bit about what this all looks like for me. But seeing as how you and I are different, I wouldn’t expect you to do it just like I do.
With that said, I hope you can see that the principles we glean from scripture are the same for all of us. These practical steps can take your schedule from a hot mess to a manageable one. You could go from surviving to thriving.
And remember, if rest was important for God then it is important for you and I as well. “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.”
Consider taking a step of faith today and cultivate a peace-filled life of blessing and joy.
Let’s pray together.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in:
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
