Introduction:
When life is tough, what keeps us going?
Hope. Right? Hope is the one thing that tells us that whatever is going wrong will eventually get better.
The opposite of that is giving up and accepting things as they are.
When things are tough as a Christian, search in scripture for the promises of God.
True story. The other night I had a really bad night. The next morning wasn’t any better. I felt like I didn’t deserve to be anywhere near God’s presence, and then He brought me this verse from Ps. 138.
The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: Thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: Forsake not the works of thine own hands.
What is that verse saying? It is saying that God will fulfill His purposes and plans for your life.
Preview: Let’s look at three different ideas from this one verse.
The Lord will fulfill His purpose for you.
His continued work in you is evidence of His ongoing love for you.
Plead for Him to continue this work.
Transition: First…
I. The Lord will fulfill His purpose for you.
The first thing you have to realize is that…
A. God has a purpose for you.
Winter of 2014 - knowing God was wanting something more for my life.
Saul’s testimony that he always believed God has had a bigger plan for Him.
What is God’s purpose for you?
He may have vocational purposes for you.
He may have a specific spouse for you.
He may have a certain church he wants you to serve in.
But what is God’s overarching purpose for your life?
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
God’s grandest design for you is that you would be like His Son.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
B. God will fulfill His purpose for you.
Think about this… God is working together all things for this end.
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
If God has saved you, His purpose has already begun. If the process has begun, it will continue.
Transition: So, how is God fulfilling this purpose?
C. How is God fulfilling His purpose for your life?
Every conversation.
Every relationship.
Every failure.
Every success.
II. His continued work in you is evidence of His ongoing love for you.
God has proved His love for us in two ways.
His Son’s death on the cross.
His continued work in our lives.
III. Plead for Him to continue this work in you.
What is the Psalmist doing here?
He is holding God to His word.
He is pleading with God to do what He said He would do.
If David knows God will fulfill His purpose, why does He need to plead for Him to do so? David knew what Jesus taught about prayer. In prayer, we are partners with God bringing about His purposes in our lives.
Conclusion:
Let’s conclude how we began.
When life is difficult, what keeps us going?
Let’s ask a better question. Think about David. Did he have any business believing that God would fulfill His purpose in His life despite everything He had done?
You are no exception. If you are God’s child, He will fulfill His purpose for your life!
