57: The interesting thing is that Mark and John make it very clear that this event happened before sunset, which would have been when the sabbath began.
Thgey wanted to keep the law and make sure there was no work begin done on the Sabbath, and Deut 21:22-23
Deuteronomy 21:22–23 ESV
22 “And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
showed they had to be buried before dark.
Who was Joseph? A Member of the Sanhedrin, from mark… he opposed the plot against Jesus from the gospel of Luke. and John goes on to tell us he was a secret disciple.
58-61
Not an unusual request…but the Jewish leaders may have broken rank and caused people to object. The request to Pilate was not unusual—it was the Jewish leaders who might have objected to Joseph’s thus ‘breaking ranks’. Rock-cut tombs of around the same period may still be seen in the area around Jerusalem (including some actually within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre), often containing more than one chamber, with niches in the sides for several bodies, the whole entered by a low ‘doorway’ with a trough outside along which a great stone is rolled to seal the entrance against animals and grave-robbers. A new tomb is not so much one recently completed, as one so far unused, i.e. with none of its niches occupied. In mentioning this, and the clean shroud (again only in Matthew), Matthew emphasizes the care and reverence of Joseph’s treatment of the body. The extremely expensive spices mentioned in John 19:39–40 are further evidence of his extravagant loyalty. For the women’s watch, see on
Matthew 27:62–66 ESV
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
62… this is the sabbath, even after all the clumsiness of Matthews way of saying it… its interesting that Matthew doesnt speak of the Sabbath, because the priests would have been breaking the laws… but it shows what he finds really important… this is the day that is most important is the day Jesus died.
63:64 Imposter and fraud are close terms… and the charge they brought against Jesus was the saje as the charge that Jesus had seen against him… so what we are seeing is the pharisees see him in teh same way… What is interesting is none of this was said in public… so someone had to have told them perhaps it was Judas that told them...
65-66 Pilate is giving them permission to use pilates gaurds for their task.
Matthew 28:1–10 ESV
1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
28:1
Some use this to speak of the function of women in the church and their roles, and while in that society this definitely brings to mind the idea that men and are equal and gives hope in a society that didnt value the witness of women, this does not speak to preaching,
28:2 Matthew 27:51
Matthew 27:51 ESV
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Another referral to an earthquake and the angel of the Lord appears for the first time since the opening of the gospel… there is no suggestion that the tomb actually needed to be opened for him to come out… instead the idea is the tomb was opened for the women to see that he was no longer there.
28:3-4 Very similar to the language of Daniel 10:6
Daniel 10:6 ESV
6 His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude.
So often in scripture… angels make people cower in fear
28:5-7
Its interesting that here the angels message is only for the WOMEN…the guards are never mentioned again
28:8 Ive always laughed at this, fear and joy normally do not go together.
28:9 There was no other mention of Jesus meeting the women and talking tio them outside the tomb.
5 things about how we train to do the great commission.
Matthew 28:16–20 ESV
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
1st one… availability.... vs 16 He told them in
Matthew 28:7 ESV
7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”
They were in Jerusalem… galilee is pretty far away.. and the greatest ability you can have is availability.... these guys were pretty simple normal dudes and there were probably 500 there that day… 1 Cor 15… he appeared to 500 at once.... so picture 500 people for the great commission… Gallilee they were fisherman… and it was the hicktown… Jerusalem was the elites… and Galilee were just the normal guys… RT France said he had such an accent people knew where he was from… ANd he was fitting this stereotype and he brings these guys back to this place… and availability is what you need FIRST… you need to be available… Im not the best guy… uI ran away I didnt listen.. I dont know all of the answers but I decided to make myself available for God...
When he asks us to move, we just say okay, because IM available.. and some of you he has been asking to do stuff… use your money, move. and you won’t.
John 17:4–6 ESV
4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. 6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
John 17:15–18 ESV
15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
I have given them your word… JOhn
There will be a group of people who believe in Jesus because of the work of the disciples throughout history… and he is saying he taught us all these things… and just as you sent me… now I am standing in front of these people and I am sending them out… and he ask for three things as he sends us out, that we will be kept from evil, secondly… that we would be pure, that he would sanctify us.... some people arent even thinking about purity anymore…
Secondly how do we actually do this, first availability, then worship
WHen they saw him they worshipped him but some doubted...
ALl of us worship something, and what the call of the great commission is that we would be profoundly impacted by him and move to worship him as the center of your life....
THe call is to actually worship Jesus… share with him that he is God… THe trinitarian vs 19… 3 in 1… they worshipped Jesus as God as you should… some doubted… some of you do right now… but the text is saying stop doubting… this means matthew isnt white washing teh story.... if he was you wouldnt write that people STILL were doubting him… hes about to fly.... and why would you show people doubting unless that is what really happened… and Jesus is saying I am sending you on a mission. the reality is the great commission questions what you are really doing with your life as a whole and not on Sunday… it asks those questions
Small church plant people showed up… want to do handbells before they started every week… and at that moment he realized he didnt want anyone at his church… just the peopel on mission for Jesus… Thats why I told Daniel when he left… know what God has called you to and dont sell out.
Quiet talks with World winners...
CLimbers Mt. Blanc french alps… climber taking up novices… rope backpack shoes… leave all the non essentials behind…only thing that can make it is the necessary stuff… one guy was like naw… wine… lenses.... and he said you wont make it to the top with this stuff… dude went ahead of them and as they follow… blanket…camera lens… empty bottle of wine… couldnt make it with all that stuff S.D. GOrdon makes this statement
“SO many people when they find they cant make it to the top with all their accessories, they let the top go and pitch their tent in the plain instead.” I dont want that to be your lfe… you can start chucking stuff off so you can get him.... or let this stuff keep you back.
Thirdly, submission...
Matthew 28:18 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
ALl authority is JEsus’ in your life… and what is fascinating about the great commssion is if you go back to the temptation story in matthew 4.... he is offering him all these things and then it says this...
The devil offers Jesus the kingdoms of the earth.,.. and Jesus says all authority on heaven and earth has been given to me,… everythign that the devil offers on a temporal plane… God was giving him on an eternal plane...
In order to get the better you have to submit.
Fourthly, obedience
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Not just converts but disciples… teaching them to observe… not just teach them to say what you say… teaching them to observe what I have commanded you… that people actually love Jesus and dont just do it out of obligation. Pick up that shirt..... EWWWWWW. no.,., you are going to do it with joy.... Not just know but love it....
Baptizing them…
The last idea is power… the only way we are ever going ot be able to do it is because he is going to give us the power to do it
