Still dealing with the topic of Christian liberty, we move on to a series of illustrations for us to learn from: Israel.
Often in Scripture, the nation of Israel and their rebellion against God are used as examples for what not to do.
Twice in this chapter Paul tells us that what is recorded in the OT of Israel was done so for our example today.

Outline:

Their Position v. 1-4
Their Problem v. 5-10
The Purpose v. 11-13

Their Position v. 1-4

Five times in verses 1-4 Paul uses the “all
1 Corinthians 10:1 KJV 1900
1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
“all our fathers” does not mean that all those in Corinth were Jews, nor was he claiming that all the Jews in the exodus were saved
The reference is to their position - they all were taken out of Egypt in this shared experience.

Paul Recalls the Exodus Experience

They “all” passed under the cloud
Speaking of guidance and protection from the scorching heat
They “all” passed through the sea
Facing certain death, God protected them
They were “all” baptized unto Moses
Meaning they were all identified by his leadership
They “all” ate the same spiritual food
Manna, called “angel’s food” in the Psalms
They “all” drank the same spiritual drink
Water from the Rock
Symbolized Christ
He/it followed them - the water evidently flowed down the river banks as they went.

Their Problem v. 5-10

Notice that word, “but” in verse 5
Even though they “all” shared the same spiritual blessings, they were not all saved!
1 Corinthians 10:5 KJV 1900
5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
God rejected everyone, but Caleb and Joshua
These two alone wanted to claim God’s promised land

Let the Application Begin!

1 Corinthians 10:6 KJV 1900
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
This recap of the Exodus is a reminder that these events were written for our learning.

Some Sins we Should Avoid

Idolatry

1 Corinthians 10:7 KJV 1900
7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Example: the Golden Calf

Fornication

1 Corinthians 10:8 KJV 1900
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
Example: Israel and Moab, at the instruction of Baalam

Tempting the Lord

1 Corinthians 10:9 KJV 1900
9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
Repeatedly the Israelites wanted to give up and return to “the better life” in Egypt.
BTW - there is not indication they had any of the luxuries they lamented in the wilderness - they were slaves!
Tempting the Lord in this case is an example of discontentment, not being satisfied with what God has provided.
God sent “fiery” serpents among them for this sin,and many were destroyed.
God also ended this plague on Israel with the brazen serpent - a type of Jesus.

Murmuring

1 Corinthians 10:10 KJV 1900
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
The most consistent sin of Israel in the wilderness
The event mentioned by Paul was the rebellion of Korah
The result was the earth was opened and swallowed several thousand people in one day… the very next day, the people blamed Moses for the deaths of Korah and God nearly destroyed everyone!
Moses and Aaron both interceded for the people so that God would spare them

The Purpose v. 11-13

Why?

Why would God inspire these events?
Why did the Holy Spirit preserve these for us today?
Why did Paul use these accounts as an illustration to the Corinthians and why are they in our Bible today?
1 Corinthians 10:11 KJV 1900
11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Ensample = a die or a stamp. A model for us to follow.
Admonition = to call our attention to something as a warning or a rebuke.
There are still valuable spiritual lessons for us to learn from these events.

Lessons Learned

To keep us from pride...
1 Corinthians 10:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
To give us victory over the temptation to sin...
1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV 1900
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Take Away

This warning of the dangers of sin is good advice
But good advice is only good if you take it.
Do not wast the wisdom God has given us in His Word.
