-Finishing Up Fingerprints today (at least for genesis)
-Next Week I have battle assembly
-Then I’m back for one week
-then I go back to battle assembly Again
-And so the next three weeks you’re going to get two summit people
-and then One of those weeks I’m going to give a completely unrelated message
-Mostly because it’s really difficult to build momentum with a series when you only have one week
-And then in December, we’re going to celebrate Christmas, as well as start our Exodus Series
-But…How we move on after Christmas depends on a few things
-Because my goal after we finish up today is to take this fingerprints idea, which I feel like we’ve hopefully gotten a lot of practice with
-And I want us to put it in our back pocket as a tool to use to read scripture
-And so as we move on from this, from now until Jesus comes back
-I want us to have this fingerprints method at our disposal that we can use.
-So What I want to do right now before we jump into the actual sermon
-Is give you all a chance to be a part of the sermon
-So this next passage I want to read to you I feel like is Loaded with fingerprints
-in fact this is what I had planned to preach on today
-But the passage is so short
-that I really couldn’t pull a full 45 minute sermon out of it
-And so I want to read to you the account of Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac
-And the big fingerprint on that story that you’ll probably all recognize is the ram that was sacrifieced in place of isaac
-Right that’s the easy one.
-But as I read this I think you’ll find that there are a ton more in passage
-So as I’m reading it I want you to pay very close attention to the details
-and in your bible or if you have a notebook, just circle all the other things that look like fingerprints to you.
-no matter how small or inconsequencial they may seem, I just want you to notice them
Genesis 22:1-19
Fingerprints
-One and only son
-Mount Moriah (temple mount)
-Rode in on a donkey
-On the third day
-Wood placed on Isaac’s back
-Isaac bound and put on the wood
-Honestly nothing makes me happier than hearing you all say that
-So what I want to do now is just give you all one more account from Genesis
So I want us to start out by realizing that Joseph here is held out as a shepherd
-the bible says that he was tending the flocks with his brothers
-and I want us to realized that Joseph is a type, a representation of the Good shepherd
-And we start out by being told that this shepherd Joseph is giving a bad report of the sons of Jacob
-Think about Jesus’ earthly ministry
-Jesus begins his ministry almost immediately by giving a bad report about the children of isreal
-The pharisees and the Sadducee
-who were decedents of isreal, they were isrealites
-But they weren’t living up to the expectations of the father
-And Jesus spends a lot of his time preaching against the pharisees, giving a bad report of them
-And his father does something important here
-What’s the significance of the robe here
-Well I think it’s important to see that he’s given the robed in the very begining of the account along with an expression of love from his father
I want to compare that with Mark chapter 1, the very begining of Jesus ministry
-See it was upon Jesus’ baptism that the father publicly expressed his loved for His son
-And in Galations 3:27, we read
-I’m going to put a hand full of verses up on the screen,
-I’m not going to read them today, but I encourage you to look up these verses later today
-I just want to put a handful of those verses up on the screen and i encourage you to look them up later this week
-and if you don’t get them all written down right now that’s fine, just come find me after service and I’ll pull them up for you
Romans 3:14
Ephesians 4:24
Colossians 3:10
1 Corinthians 15:53
1 Peter 5:5
-But we see all throughout the new testament this idea that when we become a Christian
-At the very begining of our walk with God
-The first thing we do is put on New clothes
-We clothe ourselves with Christ
-It’s part of becoming a new creation
-Now obviously Jesus had no NEED to become a new creation, because he was the new creation
-right, he didn’t need new clothes
-but he did it to set an example for us \
-and what we should be doing
-But back in Genesis we read that because of this new clothes ,because of his identity as being loved by his father,
-Josephs brothers had animosity toward him
And then we read
-So Joseph starts displaying all of these signs in the form of dreams
-And every dream he has indicates that he is going to be worshipped
-Which made his brothers even more mad
-LIkewise with Christ
-Every sign he performed was for the purpose of revealing his nature
-That’s important
-Because of us might think that Jesus came to perform miracles to heal the sick and the lame
-But those never the main point of Jesus’ miracles
-When we read the story of the man who was lowered down through the roof, what was the first thing Jesus said
-Your sins are forgiven
-And I always imagine room going quiet a little bit
-And the paralytic being like
-Um, that’s nice and all, Jesus, but we didn’t dig through a roof to have our sins forgiven.
Are you gonna do anything about the leg?
-he didn’t heal his legs right away, did he
-Because his purpose was never to do magic tricks
-Jesus’ purpose in our life is not to grant wishes
-God’s not a genie in a lamp, That’s not why he reveals himself to us.
-Jesus showed signs and wonders
-to reveal that he is the son of God
-And so the pharisees say “who can forgive sins but God alone”
-they have the same attitude that Josephs brothers had
-They’re saying who do you think you are claiming to be God?
-do you think that we’re going to bow down and worship you?
-But then in the next dream that Joseph has, it gets a little bit more interesting
-So at this point I think it’s very important that we talk about finding the right fingerprints
