Spiritual Walk

Ephesians 5:18 (KJV 1900)

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Control -

The only way to commune with God is not by the control of the world or worldly things, but by being controlled with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:19 (KJV 1900)

19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Command -

Imperative Mood - This makes it a command.

It is the main focus and stands in the center linking the Wisdom that Precedes with the Worship that Follows.

Remember, in this wisdom Paul has already given us the contrast of grieving the Spirit.

Ephesians 4:30 (KJV 1900)

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Completeness -

“filled” means “to be full to the top; lacking nothing; nothing short of complete.”

The Spirits will should be your will.

The Spirits thought should be your thoughts.

The Spirits desire should be your desire.

The Holy Spirit is to be in absolute domination of your life.

Consistency -

Active Tense - constant state of being.

Literally, we are to “go on being filled with the Spirit.”

Your private filling will pour out to public worship.

Compliance -

Passive Voice - filling is something that is done to us.

It is not something we can work up on our own, but we are to be vessels that God can fill and use for His glory.

We are to be clean, ready and open to the filling of the Spirit of God.

Spiritual Worship

Being filled with the Spirit is followed by five present-tense participles that describe the ongoing practical outworking of this infilling process in the church and the lives of its members (speaking, singing, making music, giving thanks, submitting).

The first 3 deal with the

Celebration -

Paul is following up on what he had also stated to the Colossian Christians, calling on them to teach and admonish each other

Speaking

Deals with the Words of the Spirit.

Psalms - songs of the old testament.

Hymns are used to teach theology to believers.

The lyrics are known for their truth and depth of content.

Spiritual Songs - Spirit’s leading.

There is a time, place, and purpose for all three, but notice the balance.

Singing

Deals with the Projection of the Spirit.

Making Melody

Deals with the Edification of the Spirit.

Contentment -

Thanksgiving is taking the good and the bad experiences and infusing them together in a continuous focus.

Listen, If God is for us, who can be against us?

As Christians, our worries should not consume us for we are created by God, loved by God, and adopted by God.

Go back and reread Eph 1:3-14

“Always”

Constant and regular facet of our prayer life.

“For all Things”

God gives continual blessings through the hard times as well as the good.

“to God the Father”

Abba - Father

The most Aramaic term for father.

Paul is emphasizing the fact that we have a Father who deeply loves us, enfolds us in his arms, and watches over us.

“in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”

The mediator and source of all our blessings.

“in the name of Jesus Christ” is not a magic formula to get your prayers answered, but rather the idea of union with him.

We could not approach God the Father with Jesus Christ, the son.

Collaboration -

Ephesians 5:21 (KJV 1900)

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

What does this mean?

Well, the word “submitting” is a military term.

It means “to fall in rank under another.”

Certainly, there is a thought here concerning submitting to the leaders of the congregation.

However, it runs deeper than that.

The primary idea Paul is trying to get across is that God’s people must learn to put everyone else ahead of themselves.

We live in an hour when such thinking is unheard of.

After all, everyone is demanding their own rights these days.

No one wants to give an inch.

However, in the church, things are to be carried out differently than they are in the world.

Notice what Paul said about this matter, Phil.

2:3–4 .

Philippians 2:3–4 (KJV 1900)

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

Then, in verses 5–11 of that same passage, Paul lifts up Jesus as the Supreme example of this ideal.

The point Paul is trying to make is that when we are walking in the Spirit as we should, He will enable us to forfeit our own rights for the good of the church.

I did not say that we should compromise the truth!

If someone is out of line with the Word of God, then they must be dealt with.

However, when we are walking in the Spirit of God, we will not seek to force our way regardless of what it does to the peace of the church.

The Spirit filled person will back down before they will disrupt the peace in God’s House.

It all comes down to a willingness to take the backseat instead of demanding our own way.

“Be fulled with the Spirit” leads naturally to changes in attitudes that affect our relationships with others.

This sums up this ethical section of Ephesians which began in

Who you are determines where you go and what you do.

Are you filled with the Spirit.
