Intro

Jesus is the mediator of His own.
His prayer is for all those who are in Him
John 13:1 NASB95
Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
God is love, He is the prefect example of God.
1 John 4:7 NASB95
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
Jesus prays for His own
John 17:11 (NASB95)
11“I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.
Jesus has kept them
Jesus says that he has protected them and did lose any of them. except JUDAS ,
this leads to question:
is it possible that a person could lose there salvation?
- look at Judas
Judas was never in Christ
John 6:70 NASB95
70Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?”
so again, it is possible for believers and unbelievers can rub shoulders together,
but we are in Christ. Jesus Christ is
we will never be separated from the love of God, because we are in Christ.
Romans 8:38–39 NASB95
38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor athings present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Being in Christ, we are not separated from Him.
and we are loved
let’s keep this in mind as we continue on with the Lord’s Prayer.
John 17:13–21 NASB95
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. 14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
John 17:13 (NASB95)
John 17:13 NASB95
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
This is a reminder that Jesus is praying for His people, His disciples.
Jesus prays aloud. for those around Him to hear.
To know that Jesus Himself is praying, going before the Father, to pray for them brings a comfort to the disciples. It would bring them joy.
We get to see some comfort here.
The disciples have no idea what is going on here. they are unsure, worried,
But to see that Jesus is praying for them, and only them wold give them joy.
John 17:14 (NASB95)
14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Jesus states not just the
Hate the greek would is using the (a -orse) tense meaning past tense. But it is present.
But although it speaks in past tense, it does not mean that it is only in the past.
The world will hate them, because of this.
But Jesus says that they are not of the World.
remember God brought us out of the world.
But know that we are of Him, We are His, no longer of the World.
Jesus has made the great statement that we belong to Him, and because of that the world hate us, but we are not of the World as He is not.
John 17:15–16 NASB95
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Jesus does not pray that they come out of the world like His is, but the protect them from the evil one.
To keep them protected for Satan and his evil forces that will follow after His disciples.
Because they are not of the World.
Being in Christ makes us of a new clothe, a new life, and new way. This is pf Christ. Be belong to Him,
John 17:17 NASB95
17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
Sanctify them (set apart, to make holy) them in your truth
you Word is truth - The Word of God is truth
logos is truth (John 1:1)
We are in Christ. Jesus Christ is truth.
There is no truth apart of them
John 17:18 NASB95
18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
Jesus came to the world to die on the cross, to make the Father known. To preach and teach the gospel.
Jesus send His people out to do the same, being glory to God.
John 17:19 NASB95
19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
Jesus is set apart from (for the Father’s will), and His disciples (us) will also be set apart in truth.
Where does truth come from????????
John 17:20 NASB95
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
Here we get to see that Jesus is not just asking these things for just the disciples that are now, but those who will believe because of there witness.
John 17:21 NASB95
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Jesus pray here is that those who will believe, will be one.
would it be safe to say that the world is watching,
We need to be one as the Father and Son are one.
To be one in what?
I believe its in doctrine, In knowing God. John 17:3
John 17:3 NASB95
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
by us being in unity to God, the world will see, and
as it is written:
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 NASB95
20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Jesus prayer is that we remain in Him, His prayer is that we will be safe in the world that hates us, and that we are spiritually protected from the evil one.
