By now I am sure that you have figured out that Rocky is really the Apostle Peter. Which is Greek or Peter. This sermon is the story of how he got his name.

Caesarea Philippi, that is, Caesarea in the tetrarchy of Herod Philip, Antipas’ brother.

The head waters of the Jordan 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee.
The farthest away He took his disciples outside of Jewish Territory during His earthly ministry.
At Caesarea Philippi you could see the gates of the underworld.
Christ means Messiah or Anointed One in Greek.

In Him are fulfilled all the promises of God to the nation. And as the Old Testament made clear, the Messiah is more than a human being; He is God (Isa. 9:6; Jer. 23:5–6; Micah 5:2)

Peter was saying you are God you are Divine

Jesus sets up a memorial

Our Father in heaven revealed it to Him. God is the one who reveals Himself to mankind.
Jesus has already called him Rock when He first met Simon in
John 1:41–42 CSB
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”), and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).
Rocks are important in the Bible.
Deuteronomy 27:5 CSB
Build an altar of stones there to the Lord your God—do not use any iron tool on them.
Joshua 4:21 CSB
and he said to the Israelites, “In the future, when your children ask their fathers, ‘What is the meaning of these stones?’
Joshua 10:27 CSB
At sunset Joshua commanded that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave where they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are still there today.
Genesis 28:18 CSB
Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it
Revelation 21:14 CSB
The city wall had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb were on the foundations.
Building His church was a yet-future work of Jesus Christ, for He had not yet started the process. He said, I will build (future tense) My church, but His program for the nation Israel had to be concluded before another program could be set in motion. This is probably why Jesus said not even the gates of hades would overcome this program. Jews would understand hades’ gates to refer to physical death. Jesus was thus telling the disciples His death would not prevent His work of building the church. Later (Matt. 16:21) He spoke of His imminent death. He was therefore anticipating His death and His victory over death through the Resurrection.
Louis A. Barbieri Jr., “Matthew,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary
Gates represented the center of importance to ancient cities. It is where the power of the city resided. Like the city hall today. It is almost like saying all the powers of Hell. Or more accurately the powers of death.

Jesus’ linkage of the church and the keys of the Kingdom in 16:18–19 indicates that the church is the agency of Kingdom authority on the earth.

What we do on earth in the church impacts eternity. There are eternal consequences for our actions and who we share the gospel with. As Christian we have an eternal responsibility to advance the Kingdom. Peter was given the Key to take the gospel to the gentiles thus Jesus used this pagan gentile area as backdrop to Peter future ministry and the advancement of the church.
The church was built on Peter. Now when you think of St. Peters Basilica it is probably one of the most famious Church in all of Christendom. But the building is not the church correct? I hope you see it was what Peter said and believed about Jesus that made all the difference. Jesus was talking about People when He said He would build His Church.
The birthday of the church Peter was the 1st to declare Jesus as the Son of God. Who preached at Pentecost?
Find the church at your work. Who at your work is a Christian? Who at work can become a Christian?
The Church is not going anywhere and nether should you.
Be a Rocky Christian! = Build your life on Jesus and watch Him build His church with you.
