John 9:1–2 ESV
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
John A. Purpose of the Miracle (9:1–12)

The disciples, wrapped in Old Testament legalism (Exod. 34:7), concluded there were only two possible explanations for the blindness

Exodus 20:5 ESV
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Exodus 34:7 ESV
keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
Likewise the rabbis debated whether fetuses could sin
John 9:3 ESV
Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.
Exodus 4:11 ESV
Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
“The works of God”
Works: Deed or act
His power
His ability
“Might be displayed in him”
Displayed: to be manifest v. — to be or become clearly revealed to the mind, the senses, or judgment.
God wanted to manifest he power in him!
Look at this powerful statement
John 9:4 ESV
We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.
“We” - This is a charge to the disciples
Work - to do (act) v. — to carry out or perform an action or course of action.

Day means the time allotted for Jesus to do God’s will (to do the work of Him who sent Me). We includes the disciples and by extension all believers. Night is the limit set to do God’s works. In Jesus’ case it was His coming death. As

The book of Joh is a book that i believe prepares the disciples for their assignment.

John 9:5 ESV
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
As long as I am in the world my assignment is to be the light of the world!
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:9 ESV
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
John 8:12 ESV
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
light (source of) n. — any object that serves as a source of illumination.
life (state) n. — the condition of living or the state of being alive; especially healthiness, happiness, exuberance, energy, vitality, and the like.
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
John 9:6–7 ESV
Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.
“Having said these things”
Jesus wanted His disciples to know his mission…
“He spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva”
Why Mud?
It is very important to note that is was the Sabbath day!
So the mud-making is explicitly connected with the Sabbath and the Pharisees.
Kneading dough was on the Sabbath was prohibited…
Kneading is the process of working a dough mixture to form a smooth and cohesive mass.
This includes combining a powder with a liquid to form a dough or paste.
And the word for mud or clay here is the same as the word of dough. Jesus had broken the law against kneading dough, or clay, or mud.

Why the Sabbath?

Why would he do this? To show that he was “Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8).
He defines the Sabbath. To show what the point of Sabbath rest is.
The point of Sabbath rest is healing.
That’s why you rest. Healing!
The point of Sabbath rest is that we are helpless and God creates, God sustains, God heals, we don’t.
What day could be better for God incarnate to find a broken man and heal him — to give him and his parents rest from all the struggles of blindness?
That’s what the Sabbath is for — God-exalting blessing to broken and weary humans.
And he did it on the Sabbath to trigger this controversy that goes on for 41 verses.
Hearts are exposed in this controversy. And not just exposed.
Hearts are shaped.
Faith doesn’t just get revealed; faith gets strengthened.
It wasn’t the mud that healed it was his faith to believe…
Go wash in the pool....
What a transformation
Being born blind from birth
Begging at the gate of the temple
But on the Sabbath…
The works of God being manifest in him…
This is just a physical manifestation
Look at the inward transformation....
John 9:35–38 ESV
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
