This chapter sets forth the life of triumph.
It begins with with “no condemnation” ends with “no separation” and in between there is “no defeat”.
The Holy Spirit is mentioned 19 times in the chapter.
The dominant theme is the victorious message of deliverance from sin by the power of the Holy Spirit.
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Notice it is fulfilled in us and not by us.
Verses 8:5-13 are speaking of the non believer not the state of a believer struggling between two natures.
Flesh and Spirit do not go together: They don’t mix: Somethings should not mix:
like bacon and donuts,
or Pineapple and pizza (what are foods that don’t go well together)
or pickles and peanut butter.
Buddy concocts a dish made of spaghetti, maple syrup, chocolate syrup, M&Ms, marshmallows and a chocolate fudge Pop Tart.
For some food on the plate don’t mix.
Oil and water
Our budget and gas prices.
Me and running.
Flesh and Spirit don’t go well together.
anger and patience
sexual immorality and purity
hate and love
flying off the handle and self control
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
The Greek has it, “For those who are habitually dominated by the flesh put their mind on the things of the flesh” The flesh here is the evil nature. “Dominated” is from kata (κατα), “down.” The present participle is used, the state being continuous.
This is an unsaved person, habitually dominated by the indwelling sinful nature.
The unsaved person does not have the Spirit of God (Rom. 8:9) and lives in the flesh and for the flesh.
His mind is centered on the things that satisfy the flesh.
But the Christian has the Spirit of God within and lives in an entirely new and different sphere. His mind is fixed on the things of the Spirit.
I’ve seen people who said a prayer and has no proof or fruit of the Spirit’s indwelling in their life.
This does not mean that the unsaved person never does anything good, or that the believer never does anything bad.
Unbeliever: Bill Gates describes himself as an "agnostic/atheist" donated over $26 billion to charity - Warren Buffet who is agnostic and is the 5th richest person in the world pledged to give away 99% of his wealth to charity.
Button: The believer can and does fleshly things but here’s the difference. I have a seemingly simple illustration that might help you called the button.
Want you to imagine, i want you to think of the sin which you keep on committing over and over again you know that repetitive sin. The desires of the flesh that keep you down. The weight that keeps you from follow God’s plan for your life. An area that is producing death.
i want you to imagine that if you push this red button the desire for that sin will forever be removed so in other words you will never ever again be able to commit that sin that you keep going back to over and over again.
so what am i going to ask you would you do it. would you push this red button right now and never ever again have the opportunity to commit that sin. if the answer's yes i think there's a very strong sign right now that the holy spirit is living within you.
i think that's evidence that there is a work of the Holy Spirit in your life and at your very epicenter you want nothing more than to live for the lord Jesus Christ to live fully for him and to get free from this sin.
15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
suppose we had a non-christian standing here right now and i asked him the exact same question he'd say no way there's no way i'd push that busting i love my sin, i love my lust, i want to stay in my sin. I never want to “be set free”
Setting the mind on things of the flesh produces death. Are there things in your life producing death. Think of the areas of our life.
Death in Genisis:
Types of Death:
Death here is manifested in fear and shame. Is there some area’s of fear in our life, depression.
Definition of insanity is to do something over and over again expecting a different result. I have a chip in my tooth. How I lost part of my tooth.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
