This week I heard the following

I. Intro: poem

It was Spring, but it was Summer I wanted: The warm days and the great outdoors.It was Summer, but it was Fall I wanted: The colorful leaves and the cool, dry air. It was Fall, but it was Winter I wanted: The beautiful snow and the joy of the holiday season. It was Winter, but it was Spring I wanted The warmth and the blossoming of nature. I was a child, and it was adulthood I wanted: The freedom and the respect. I was 20, but it was 30 I wanted: To be mature and sophisticated. I was middle-aged, but it was 20 I wanted: The youth and the free spirit. I was retired, but it was middle-aged I wanted: The presence of mind without limitations. My life was over, and I never got what I wanted……I was reminded of that this week as I approach the text because once again Paul is directing Timothy..on how to deal with these false teachers in the church..who thought that godliness…was a means of gain…finical gain…..which lead them to seek material possession and things…..which leads to a downward spiral of discontent…always wanting more….which if we are not careful is our same condition…….See

-Discontentment is fueled by a lack of truth and contentment in Christ.

..but a heart that is staffed in Christ is the secret to contentment…but how do we get such great gain in this contentment?……I. I.

I. True gain is contentment in sound teaching (3-5)

Ex: Paul is going to give us some more insight into these false teachers how to detect them and some of the character they produce. First he says…teach and urge these things…..meaning…Timothy teach everything he had told him thus far in the letter….but not just teach urge..meaning apply these to your life….Spurgen use to say…where the application begins, there the sermon begins…..very important…to ask..how does this apply shape us more into the image of Christ…but then notice…if anyone teaches a different doctrine….and what is the different doctrine?? And does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness,…..the phrase sound words……referrers to healthy…the health…the spirality leaders are spreading sickness because they don’t have true health that comes form JESUS..He isn’t Lord…..the teaching that accords with godliness…Is the teaching that you don’t get godliness from anyone other than Jesus…….See once again he

-The false teacher are not content with Jesus, he isn’t enough. (3-4)

….The main question to get out of any teaching guys..book, podcast, new chruch…what do they do with Jesus…is he the main thing……?…One of the songs we have been sining is there is ONE GOSPEL..on which we stand…I stand in the gospel (goodness) Jesus Christ….ILL The moment we say Jesus plus…..we loose the gospel….that is not good news….I did this iLL for youth Chocolate milk is awesome because it has ONE ingredient….. chocolate syrup…..ranch dressing though is great too…with carrots…..barbecue sauce…on chicken nuggets….Christianity…the sound doctrine…is the words of Christ….He remains center…..so those that put him on display…what kind of chatter follows the false teacher…..verse 4…He is puffed up with conceit and understand nothing…

-Conceit is a word that denotes an illusion.

..….he thinks he knows everything but he doesn’t…and notice the text says instead of the healthy craving of Jesus on center stage….he has unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words……..they have a little pet doctrine, how the final days will come about are you premill A-mill post-mill…..are you a seven day creations (literal days) or old earth they weren’t literal days….and all the while they love nit picking….and miss Jesus…..and what does it do in a church?…which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions…..they are constantly just interjection things causing division………and constant friction among people who are deprived in mind and deprived of the truth……..what is so bad is they are so deprived in mind…that they are robbed of the truth…truth meaning the gospel truth…Which they are teaching people who are also deprived of the truth…APP:….and the scariest motive of FT says

-These teachers thought godliness was a means of finical gain. (5)

imagining that godliness is a means of gain…meaning….they keep teaching this false teaching to gain (Money)….get wealthy…modern day this is the healthy, and weath, prosperity gospel….come to Jesus and get stuff!….blessing…..and see this is why Paul is needing to spend most of his letter correcting this false means of godliness…as earning Christ…and stopping these false teachers….because there teaching feeds the flesh……..people flock to this teaching..becasue we are depraved..Tim says 2 Tim…people won’t endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions….JESUS…is just for their gain…for there name…..not His glory…….Listen…we come to Jesus to get him……die to ourselves….and so live……What are you doing with Jesus? Are you content in him enough……..He is what we stand on! …..Paul then is going to say well if you don’t gain godliness with moral false teaching to just get wealth…..what do we do with wealth….and gaining

II. True gain is contentment in Christ over material possessions (6-10)

Ex:so we are going to start with the negative….what does false discontentment look like for those who put their hope in wealth…Verse 9, But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare….ok…so first notice that this says a desire to be rich…..you don’t have to be rich to fall into this life of discontent with money….you can have very little and still be truly discontent…because your always desiring more….text says into many senseless and harmful desire that plunge people into ruin and destruction….verse 10…..For the LOVE of money is a root of all kinds of evils. …..now this verse is one of the most miss quoted and mis-understood verses in the Bible….because a lot of people says money is a root of all kinds of evil….wrong…..Money is neutral……

-What is wrong and harmful is not money but the LOVE of money.

……….this idea that your life is about how much money can you require…..so that you can use that money to build a many little kingdom for your self right now……..See that word snare can be translated trap is key… which leads to senseless and harmful desire…..See living for money, and this disire for more….is deceptive it’s tricks…heard put like this its like drinking seawater has a high concentration of salt, so the more you drink, the thirster you get……and listen what become dangerous for us here in the west….is we are rich….and we should celebrate gift God has given…but we have to be carful because… the more money we have the more we think o my standard of material passion should go up….and then we just keep going and it can become addictive we need more and more and more……and….wealth is such a false security…..we start self justify our selfs…..we are good…..Bernard of Clairvaux to see a man humble under prosperity is the greatest rarity in the world…….it can blind us……which then plunges us into ruin….and also it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs…Seawater does make you thirsty yes…but acutely cause’ you to become dehydrated more quickly…..and if continue to drink it you will eventually go unconscious and die…..See when money is our savior..security, hope……your now on hamster wheel spinning and constantly anxious and distracted where contemned is….Proverbs says don’t grant me riches because unless I am full and deny you..and say who is the Lord..or poor than steal..riches can blind you to the LORD….This is hard…was working on this sermon walked upstairs to running magazine…not that its bad to stuff….but….is our hope their..if it is destruction will follow…as we close how do we get contentment?…..verse 6 Godliness with contentment is great gain…that word contemned was used in greek philosophy and was the highest virtue..and descried those who were self sufficient didn’t need anyone or anything…that’s not what He is saying…

-Christianity is not self selfsufiency but Christ sufficient.

Godliness Is gain because gain comes from Jesus.

…content comes form him….Paul just shows that…verse 7 he reminds us…you brought nothing into the world and we cannot take anything out… Possessions are only the traveling luggage of time; they are not the stuff of eternity. It would be sensible therefore to travel light.ILL:: It is like the old story about the millionaire. When he died, everyone wanted to know what was in his will. So they whispered to the minister, “How much did he leave behind?” “Everything!” the minister said. “He had to leave it all behind!”….Then he says But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content…..basic needs….not that its wrong again ever to have great vacation or time of enjoyment but that not your heart…you heart…I don’t have to have those…APP:.see one of the best things…we can learn to tell ourselves is no….even when maybe we could have it…Im good..don’t need it today..

-Paul is saying the secret to contentment is knowing Christ.

-Phil 4:11-13.

I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low ( o did he…wow). and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance ( so at times great wealth.), I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need….and then he says the verse that has so wrongly be high jacked by sports teams around the world…… I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

CON See Paul just said contentment is not circumstancial …you can have a ton…and be discontent and have a little and be discontent….it all boiles down toward..the one thing that never changes when ever thing could change…you could loose everything…or you get a lot of money…..and think I have it all….and you don’t by the lie…because it’s not eternal…the only thing…that reminds stand fast unomoveable…the sure anchor of the soul…is a soul a heart staffed in Christ……..knowing that he says…..he takes care of the lilies and the birds…he is going to care for us………He will never abodunon us……See in close….a man approach Jesus in Mark 10 who was so rich….asks teacher what must I DO…to be saved..Jesus looks at him and loves him….Jesus goes to the heart…..he simple says you have been putting money at the heart….and not me….you need me at the heart…the man walks away sad..couldn’t give up the wealth…Jesus goes on says it’s difficult for rich to enter the kingdom of god …but then he says with man it’s impossible but not with God..all things are possible ….Jesus looks at you this morning loves you..says I am better…..says I’m the one thing that last for eternity…..pray that God wold give you eyes to see HE is all you need…and He is true gain….As newton says
