Habakkuk Chapter 3
Chapter 3:1-2 Habakkuk’s Prayer
3:2. Habakkuk had heard God’s purposes to discipline Judah and destroy Babylon. The report filled him with awe. God’s plans were beyond human understanding and God’s preeminence beyond comprehension. The reaction to what he “heard” (lit., “Yahweh I have heard the hearing of You”) was to fear God (lit., “I am afraid”).
The prophet then expressed two petitions. He prayed for a fresh manifestation of God’s power (Renew them, i.e., Your deeds) and a full measure of God’s pardon. Both might and mercy were requested. These were the only petitions in his entire prayer.
The first request for renewal or revival of God’s intervention was twice linked to time: in our day and in our time (lit., “in the midst of the years” on both occasions). It seems that the prophet desired a prompt fulfillment. God had, of course, already promised it (1:5).
The prophet’s second request evolved from the first. In these acts of judgment (wrath; cf. 3:8, 12) Habakkuk pleaded for mercy.
Chapter 3: 3-15 Habakkuk’s song of remembrance! Remembering who God is through His mighty presence in history! Using examples from the Exodus and Creation.
Mt. Sinai God came down to Moses
the plagues and pestilence
Nature was convulsed at Sinai when God came down.
Verse 8 God was not angry at nature! as we continue to read through v.13......God was using nature as a tool to demonstrate His power. *remember the red sea?
Selah- to stop and meditate!
v.11 sun and moon stood still Joshua 10:12-13
v. 13 shows us that God’s anger was not against nature but the wickedness and sin. Providing salvation for his people.
v.14-15 THE CRUSHING POWER OF GOD’S JUDGEMENT, USING THE EXAMPLE OF PHARAOH'S ARMY BEING CRUSHED AT THE RED SEA AND SENT TO A WATERY GRAVE,
V.16: Habakkuk describes the impact of God’s revelation to him in the first two chapters!
**Habbakuk comes to a well thought out conclusion based on THE GOD HE KNOWS!
V.17 NO MATTER WHAT COMES MY WAY AS THE RESULT OF GOD’S JUDGEMENT-ABSOLUTE RUIN NO FOOD, NO SHEEP OR CATTLE.
V.18 Habakkuk did not state that he would merely endure in the hour of distress. He said he would rejoice in the LORD and be joyful.
Joy is available to everyone, even to those stripped of every material possession, for joy is to be found in a Person. It comes through an intimate and personal relationship with the Lord, so that even those in the worst circumstances can smile
