Chapter 2

ETERNAL LIFE

Romans 2:7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

PROMISE OF GOOD AND EVIL

Romans 2:8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

BETTER LAW

Romans 2:13 those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

TRUE BELIEVER

Romans 2:29 who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.

Chapter 3 State of Righteousness

a pivotal chapter

God is declared faithful verses 1 to 8

man is declared unrighteous verses 9 to 20

the gaining of God’s righteousness verses 21 to 31

Sacred Trust

Romans 3:1–2 NIV

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.

huge discussion around the privilege of the Jews

Jews and Gentiles alike will be judged by God

hence verse 29 - one who obeys the law!

the discussion turns back to the advantages of being a Jew

there is an entrustment of the words of God

Us Christians

find ourselves in a similar position

we have been entrusted with the Holy Spirit an the Word

we have much advantage and much privilege

it is not something that we should take for granted

it is not something that we should boast in

much in every way

Every Way

the benefits are unlimited in Christ

even in our worst moments the blessings are great

we have the Holy Spirit, our great teacher

John 14:26 NIV

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

we have the truth of God

there is a divine promise that we should be slow to ignore

the Holy Spirit will remind you of everything I have said to you

spoken to the disciples and still relevant today

Value of Christ

2 Timothy 3:15 NIV

and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

wise for salvation

salvation is the process of becoming Christ like

we have eternal life upon confession

then we have obligation to be holy

this is salvation, working out how to live a godly life

Romans 3:4 NIV

Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”

God is True

the failings of man does not reflect on God

God is consistently faithful

what we do does not impact who God is

our unfaithfulness does not nullify’d God’s

man-centric - means we see God with man’s eyes and thoughts

it cannot be

False Thinking

Romans 3:8 NIV

Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just!

a classic retort to flawed thinking

if our sinful live shows God’s glory then we should sin more

or do not worry about sin because we are forgiven , washed clean in the blood of Christ

let us do evil that good may result

is God unjust if our sin promotes his righteousness?

these questions are man based - our pride above Jesus’ grace

no substance to any of this

Summary

God is righteous and just

Christ brings salvation through the shedding of his blood

We, as sinners, can only gain righteousness (eternal life) through faith
