TS: The Father calls upon the world to notice 2 things:
The Messiah/Servant will be a human being born of a virgin
Luke 1:30–33 NKJV
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
He will be an individual, distinct from the whole nation which has also been called God’s Servant
The verses we examine this morning record the words of The Father and Immanuel, His anointed Servant.
RS:
Isaiah 49:1–14 NKJV
“Listen, O coastlands, to Me, And take heed, you peoples from afar! The Lord has called Me from the womb; From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name. And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, And made Me a polished shaft; In His quiver He has hidden Me.” “And He said to me, ‘You are My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified.’ Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord, And my work with my God.’ ” “And now the Lord says, Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, And My God shall be My strength), Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” Thus says the Lord, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful, The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.” Thus says the Lord: “In an acceptable time I have heard You, And in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You and give You As a covenant to the people, To restore the earth, To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages; That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ “They shall feed along the roads, And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights. They shall neither hunger nor thirst, Neither heat nor sun shall strike them; For He who has mercy on them will lead them, Even by the springs of water He will guide them. I will make each of My mountains a road, And My highways shall be elevated. Surely these shall come from afar; Look! Those from the north and the west, And these from the land of Sinim.” Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people, And will have mercy on His afflicted. But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, And my Lord has forgotten me.”

I. The words of the Father to Immanuel (49:3, 5–13)

God calls The Servant Israel showing the intimate tie between king and kingdom
When the King speaks, the nation is speaking
A. “I will display my glory through you” (Isa 49:3).
Isaiah 49:3 NKJV
“And He said to me, ‘You are My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified.’
In Immanuel, Jesus, God will be glorified.
In taking on flesh, God the Son brought ultimate glory to God.
He displayed His love
He displayed His grace
He connected with us and identifies with us as human
Saving souls glorifies God!
Jesus came
B. “You will redeem and restore Israel” (Isa 49:5):
Isaiah 49:5 NKJV
“And now the Lord says, Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, And My God shall be My strength),
God commissions the Son to bring Israel back to him.
Jesus came to the Jews first. Later, primarily through churches, He preached to gentiles
He had a special mission of redeeming and reclaiming Israel which will ultimately be fulfilled at His second coming
Zechariah 12:10–13:1 NKJV
“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. And the land shall mourn, every family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves; all the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves. “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.
C. “You will be a light to the Gentiles” (Isa 49:6):
Isaiah 49:6 NKJV
Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
The Son will bring salvation to the ends of the earth.
The mission extends beyond descendants by birth to include descendants by faith.
Jesus is the life giver to ALL people!
This was a fulfillment of Israel’s Great Commission!
Isaiah 19:24 NKJV
In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land,
Today, God works through the churches, but the day is coming during the Tribulation He will again reach out to the world through Israel.
Revelation 7:1–10 NKJV
After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed: of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed. After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
During the final 7 years of Earth before the millennial Kingdom, Jewish missionaries will proclaim the gospel to all the Earth.
D. “After suffering rejection, you will be honored by all nations” (Isa 49:7):
Isaiah 49:7 NKJV
Thus says the Lord, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful, The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.”
Notice even here we see the two-fold nature of Christ’s advent
1- despised and abhorred
1st advent, Christmas
He came in humility as a servant who ultimately suffered for sins
2- worshipped and adored
He is returning as King of Kings and will be acknowledged by all.
Kings will stand at attention, and princes will bow low when the Lord walks by.
E. “You will usher in the Millennium” (ISA 49:8–13):
Isaiah 49:8–13 NKJV
Thus says the Lord: “In an acceptable time I have heard You, And in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You and give You As a covenant to the people, To restore the earth, To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages; That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ “They shall feed along the roads, And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights.
Everything will be made perfect for Israel, the Earth, all all who remain.

II. The words of Immanuel to the Father(Isa 49:4)

Isaiah 49:4 NKJV
Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord, And my work with my God.’ ”
“My labor seems in vain, but I’ll leave everything in your hands!”
The Servant would meet suffering and anguish in his first coming.
He was rejected by His own
Thousands flocked to Him and then abandoned Him
In human terms, it looks like Jesus’ mission failed
No overthrow of Rome
No restoration of creation to Eden-like conditions.
Yet, God judges by a different standard!
He faithfully endured it all and accomplished the purpose of the Father
John 1:9–11 NKJV
That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
He atoned for sin and opened the gates of heaven to all who repent.
We are approaching Isa 53 where we see the suffering servant
Isaiah 53:3–6 NKJV
He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Ultimately, at His second coming we will see exactly how successful he truly is!

III. The words of Immanuel to himself (49:1–2; 50:4–9)

A. “He commissioned me before my physical birth” (ISA 49:1).
Isaiah 49:1 NKJV
“Listen, O coastlands, to Me, And take heed, you peoples from afar! The Lord has called Me from the womb; From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
Jesus was sent for the purposes we have mentioned: salvation and restoration of the Earth
B. “I am a mighty weapon in his hands” (Isa 49:2):
Isaiah 49:2 NKJV
And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, And made Me a polished shaft; In His quiver He has hidden Me.”
His words of judgment are as sharp as a sword.
Jesus is returning as the righteous and conquering King and will judge
Judgment seat of Christ- believers for reward
Great White Throne- world for eternal life or condemnation
C. “He gives me perfect wisdom, that I might comfort those in need” (Isa 50:4).
Isaiah 50:4 NKJV
“The Lord God has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned.
Jesus is our hope
He strengthens the weak and weary
He encourages us
Jesus Obeyed God and comforted us
D. “I obediently follow him, even when I suffer for it” (Isa 50:5–7):
Isaiah 50:5–7 NKJV
The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting. “For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.
He does not rebel or turn away from his Father’s plan.
Matthew 26:67 NKJV
Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,
Matthew 27:26 NKJV
Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
Matthew 27:30 NKJV
Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
John 18:22 NKJV
And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
Jesus endured it all in obedience.
E. “He totally vindicates me” (Isa 50:8–9):
Isaiah 50:8–9 NKJV
He is near who justifies Me; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is My adversary? Let him come near Me. Surely the Lord God will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up.
All his enemies are destroyed.[1]
Jesus’ final victory will remove all doubt!
In spite of mocking and rejection, The Father was always on His side.
He endured that out of faithfulness and love

Conclusion:

We have seen the Messiah in sharp detail. Predicted in Isaiah and fulfilled in the person of Jesus.
Do you know Him today?
Are you living for Him?
