James may be the most relevant NT book for the church of the 21st century, especially the Western churches of our day. As believers, we continue to see how the tongue can veer out of control in forms of pride, anger, deceit, and dishonesty. Yet with the same mouth, we can edify the Lord and encourage others. Today, we communicate or speak in the forms of forms social media, text messing, and written communication as well. With the tongue, we bless our Lord and Father in church or private prayer. Moments later believers may curse people, all of whom have been made in the likeness of God (Gn 1: 26-27; 9: 6). James reminds us that we must tame our tongue. He echoes Jesus' words "But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man." Matt 15:18 (HCSB). Our words affect everything and everyone. Our words must be True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind.
