Obeying God’s Word
Obeying God’s Word
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Learn to Listen to God Before You Speak
James 3:6
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
Your life is shaped by your words. And the tongue is set on fire by hell. We need God’s help to transform the words we say. What can transform our words and anger? Hearing and Recieving the word of God.
Left to ourselves, the words we say will destroy others around us.
Ecclesiastes 5:1-2
1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. 2 Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.
We must be careful to listen to God more than we speak.
Drawing near to listen to God is beter than just talking to God about your problems. Because God will show you what your true problem is if you listen. Your problem is not the evil around you..its the evil within you.
Untill you listen to God, you will never know what needs to be changed, and you will not know what God is calling you to remove.
We aren’t changed by just hearing the word though, we are changed by recieve the word! Recieving the word is taking it, and doing something with it.
Its like when Elayna tells me to do something around the house…and she’ll ask and I’ll say, I hear you. And she’ll say, “I know what that means.” That means I hear it..but that doesn’ tmean I’m going to do anything with it! Shes not telling me to just hear, she’s telling me to respond.
Recieve with meekness/humility!
It doesn’t take humility to hear, it takes humility to recieve it. Sometimes we are so stubborn we are like, I hear you..so what. I know dad said that, but so what. I know the teacher said that, but so what. We think, I don’t have to do that. I can do my own thing.
Listen to God before you speak..and then recieve it and act!
Jesus at the cross. Prayed, heard from God..and though He coud’ve killed us, he listened to God and laid his life down.
Hear and do, and he says that if we don’t we are just fooling ourselves.
The word is like a mirror. It shows what we look like. It shows the things about us that are dirty or messed up. The word is a mirror, and if he hear the word, see our face, and do nothing, he says we are fooling ourselves. If you look in the mirror, see something in your teeth, and then turn around, don’t get it out of your teeth…you are no better off.
If we hear and recieve what God says..listen to Him..we will be changed!
Although, there is a problem…the word can show you whats wrong, but it can’t fix you. The mirror doesn’t clean you. Jesus is like the sink. He will clean you. The word shows you what needs to be chagned, and then it turns us to Jesus as we allow Him to change us.
If we walk away from the word unchanged, its because we are not turning to Jesus. If you try and fix your tongue without prayer or reading your bible and asking Jesus for help..you won’t be able to do it.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
If you are not changed by the word or by Jesus, and you say that you are a Christian, you are fooling yourself.
If you are not changed by the word or by Jesus…its not that Jesus isn’t able to, or that you’re too dirty..its that you haven’t actually came to the sink.
Genuine faith in Jesus will leave you changed.
2Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
If you trust in Jesus, you are changed!
John 15:4-5
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
If you are not changing, it isn’t God’s fault. If we come to the word, see our sin and mess..but don’t spend time with Jesus..nothing changes.
