If we’re already righteous ~ why are we told to pursue righteousness?

1 Thessalonians 5:23 ~ we are a three-part being ~ spirit, soul & body.

Our spirit relates to God.

Our soul (mind, will & emotions) relates to each other and to the world.

Our body (physical) operates in our 5 senses.

Ephesians 2:1

‘And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.’

‘Pursue’ means to follow; to seek; and to take measures to obtain or accomplish.

Proverbs 15:9

‘The Lord detests the way of the wicked, but He loves those who pursue righteousness.’ NIV

• ‘Follow’ in Strong’s Concordance is H7291 radaph, & means to run after; chase; or pursue.

• ‘The Lord hates the ways of evil people, but loves those who do what is right.’ GNT

• To seek righteousness, means to seek to do what is right in God’s eyes.

• God’s righteousness is only made possible by God.

1 Timothy 6:11

‘But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.’

• ‘Righteousness’ is Strong’s Concordance G1343 ‘dikalosune’ and it means, equity (of character or act); specially (Christian) justification.

• We are already in right standing with God ~ but our godly actions toward others must be walked out each day.

• ‘Godliness’ is Strong’s Concordance G2150 ‘eusebeia’ and means to ‘be like God.’

2 Timothy 2:22

‘Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.’

• Pursue righteousness together, with others who also call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

• We all need other members of the body of Christ to help us mature.

• Those with a clean, pure heart ~ are those that have a humble heart.

Ephesians 6:14

‘Stand therefore having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,’

Matthew 6:33

‘But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.’

We pursue righteousness when we pursue the character of Christ and desire holiness

more than we desire to indulge our flesh.
