Faith in Action is Rewarded Genesis 24:12- 17.
English Standard Version (Chapter 24)
12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.
13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac.
By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”15
Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder.
16 The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known.
She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up.
17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.”
Not everyone who asks for a sign receives one.
Sometimes the response from God is so quick it is downright exciting.
This is the moment that sweeps men off their feet.
He asks for drink and he is looking for a girl who will not only give him a drink but also that she will give his 10 camels a drink.
She hits the nail on the head.
It was just as Eliezer had formed the conversation in his mind.
Down to the exact words.
Verse 15 gives us the nature of quickness to show that it was a God moment, “before he had finished speaking” and Boom!
Rebekah was there!
I can imagine Eliezer’s heart is racing as he makes his request of this beautiful young lady.
Weeks and even months of preparation, mile upon mile of travel, day after day of seemingly endless time spent in the saddle and the moment is here.
The statement from the last time was made for the Lord to show His steadfast love to Eliezers Master, Abraham.
This is that moment of truth.
Soon we will find out that he was prosperous in his journey of faith.
Vs.21
Rebekah is Revealed v. 15- 17.
The Lord has truly prepared a proper bride for Isaac and the answer to his prayers.
This is Rebekah, born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, and the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
She is described as very beautiful, attractive, and wow!
The word “attractive” is such that this moment of draw dropping truth is the moral equivalent of the opposite of evil.
She is more than good.
She is the one in Abraham’s line that keeps the covenant and promise going!
It is the sublime side of Godly interest, and physical attraction.
Praise God for female beauty and honor.
In her humility, Rebekah knocks it out of the park.
She is not just available, she has not been tarnished by a relationship with another man.
The Importance of Rebekah
These men made big requests of each other and of God because this woman was a key to the success of God’s covenant with Abraham.
God can bless whomever He wants but special people who figure mightily in the big picture are going to find heaven and earth moving to make sure their place in history and the Bible story is secure.
Genesis—Beginning and Blessing (Chapter 38: Faith and Providence)R.Kent Hughes
If this was Eliezer of Damascus, he had been at one time a potential heir of Abraham, who had been now displaced by the birth of Abraham’s sons (cf.
Genesis 15:2).
In character he was like the future John the Baptist who declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30)
Eliezer is right there as she comes up from filling her jar and he asks the first important question: “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” and she says, “sure.”
That is short for “Drink my lord.”
Then she speaks the next line of Eliezer’s prayer, “I will draw water for your camels also until they are finished.
!0 camels can drink a lot of gallons and she moves all of that water with her jar.
No wander Eliezer wanted to drink first, because after that she is filling the camel trough.
He is giving her a patriarchal stare down vs.22 because soon he will know for certain.
She must accept his offer and invite him to her home.
The Truth is Now Made Manifest 24:18- 28
English Standard Version (Chapter 24)
18 She said, “Drink, my lord.”
And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink.
19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.”
20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels.
21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.22
When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are.
Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.”
26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD 27 and said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master.
As for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”
28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.
Let’s stop to take in everything that has been accomplished by God’s divine providence.
1, The offer to drink from Rebekah just as he asked of God.
2. The offer to water the 10 camels until they were done drinking, just as he asked.
3.
All of the camels drank their full.
There was no rush or half job.
vs.21 - The man gazed at her in silence.
He was not a creepy old man but a servant of God seeing the fulfillment of Abraham’s and his faith being played out before him only.
As everything is about timing, let’s not spoil the moment by jumping ahead of God
vs.22 At the proper time, he brings out the instruments of engagement
a.
The Gold ring, a half a shekel, about worth $240.
It does not say in the text if he had been to Jared.
b.
The two bracelets worth about $4800.
So, that makes these the $5,000 questions,” Whose daughter are you?
And, is there room in your fathers house for me to spend the night.
She answers so appropriately, I am: The daughter of Bethuel, who is the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
There it is!
The family of Abraham.
Nahor is the brother of Abraham and from the line of Shem.
This is spot on.
It even impressed Rebekah.
After some moments of praise to God in verses 26 and 27 from Eliezer, she runs home to tell mama.
He is thankful for God’s steadfast love and faithfulness to his master Abraham, and how that God led him directly to Abraham’s family, out of all of the families he could have encountered.
He found family on the first try.
truly amazing.
Two weeks ago, we contemplated how that God had led Eliezer while he was in the way or on his path to do the will of God.
Before there ever was a Proverbs 3:5, 6, there was Eliezer.
He was a right hand man, he was not the son.
He was the oldest of His servants so he would have no romantic interest in Rebekah like a younger man might.
He was there only to do his masters bidding.
This man had the leading of the great Shepherd of our souls:
King James Version (Psalm 23)
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.2
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:He leadeth me beside the still waters.3
He restoreth my soul:He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
God can do for us, the same as he has done for Eliezer.
