Hosea 14

September 7, 2006

Intro: We saw the body last week and upon examination we found

           the cause of death:

A- The symptoms seen were: Idolatry, Adultery, and Amnesia

1- The disease = THE PRESENTS OF PRIDE.

                             a- The cause; a little virus/bacteria/germ = SIN.

2- Really what we saw was a: dead nation

                       existing.

                                      - Really we saw a nation for which there is no

                                        hope.

Hosea 13:16, Samaria is held guilty, For she has rebelled against her God. They shall fall by the sword, Their infants shall be dashed in pieces, And their women with child ripped open.

B- SO, here in Chapter 14 God goes into the CURE.

1- A cure for the hopeless and revival for the dead.

Ephesians 2:1-10

a- So what is the 1st step in obtaining such a cure?

                                      - Just as you need to call the Dr., Go to the

                                        hospital, take your medication.

                                                * When it comes to Spiritual matters

                                                 YOU NEED TO REPENT.

                                                * Nowhere in the scriptures to you see

                                                 FORGIVENESS without

                                                 REPENTANCE.

2 Corinthians 7:10, For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

> Repentance ; A change of heart that results in a change in

                           action.

1 John 2:4, He who says, “I know Him,” (I’m a Christian) and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

          C- Well didn’t Israel repent? REMEMBER 6:1-3.

1- Really, what tells the story, is a comparison of the

FALSE repentance of Chapter 6 and what God

                       requires for a Proper Repentance.

Compare: Hosea 6:1, Come, and let us return to the Lord; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.

Read Verse 1

#1- The 1st thing necessary for a Proper Repentance is the

       ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF SIN.

A- Notice how in Chapter 6 there was no repentance and

acknowledging of sin BUT just the desire for the results

              of sin to go away.

1- Lord make: AIDS, Terrorists, WARS,

                                           EARTHQUAKES, ...   All go away.

a- Without the acknowledge of sin there can be

no repentance, without repentance there can

be no forgiveness, without forgiveness there

                                 can be no salvation.

                                      - TODAY: Lord I’ve made some mistakes,

Lord I’ve got some personal failures here,

                                        Lord I’ve slipped up.

Isaiah 53:5a, But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; ...

Psalm 51:2-4, Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.

2- The word used in Verse 1 = “iniquity” or depravity.

a- Story of the scorpion and turtle

#2- The 2nd thing necessary for a Proper Repentance is the

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF SIN, & A DESIRE FOR A DEEP

       CLEANING.

Hosea 6:2, After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.

Read Verse 2

A- A “quick fixer” is not willing to pay the price for the

              necessary end result.

1- Our carpet cleaning and the deep dirt.

a- BUT the Lord, He desires to get down to the

                                heart of the matter.

                                      - God is NOT in the heart repair business, He

is in the heart replacement business.

Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

Read Ezekiel 36:24-28

Hosea 14:2, Take words with you, And return to the Lord. Say to Him, “Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously, For we will offer the sacrifices of our lips.

Matthew 12:34, For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

#3- The 3rd thing necessary for a Proper Repentance is the

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF SIN, A DESIRE FOR A DEEP

CLEANING, & AN APEAL TO GOD’S GOOD GRACE.

Hosea 6:3, Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth.

Hosea 14:2, Take words with you, And return to the Lord. Say to Him, “Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously,...

A- This is the knowledge that there is no other basis upon

               which I may be forgiven.

Ephesians 2:8, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

1- Salvation is not a chemical reaction.

a- Salvation is not = 1 part walking down the isle, 1

part saying the sinners prayer, and 1 part

                                Information from Sal.

                                      - We are saved by the precious blood of the

                                        lamb.

> We see the Prophet understands this:

Read Verse 3

1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

> God’s reaction to our Proper Repentance:

Hosea 14:4, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him.

A- Ever watch this old house: Where they take an old broken

down house and make it a thing of beauty.

1- God does the same thing with “this old life”

#1- The result of a proper repentance A LIFE SUCH AS A LILY.

Hosea 14:5, I will be like the dew to Israel; He shall grow like the lily,

A- Dew = His word that leads us into something of beauty.

1- The idea is; obedience to God’s world will repair the

                       damage of past disobedience.

Joel 2:25, “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, ...

a- The restoration of appearance and temperament.

#2- The result of a proper repentance TO SOAR AS A CEDAR OF

       LEBANON.

Hosea 14:5, I will be like the dew to Israel; He shall grow like the lily, And lengthen his roots like Lebanon.

A- A reference to the tall, deep, long lasting strength of

              Lebanon’s cedar trees.

1- The oldest living Cedar trees today?

                             a- Becharri, Lebanon, 2000+ years

Isaiah 40:30-31, Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

#3- The result of a proper repentance IS TO HAVE THE OFFERING OF AN OLIVE TREE.

Hosea 14:6, His branches shall spread; His beauty shall be like an olive tree, And his fragrance like Lebanon.

A- This speaks of value as olive oil was a valuable

              commodity of the time.

1- This is the output of God’s word through the working of

                        the Spirit.

Galatians 6:8, For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

#4- The result of a proper repentance IS TO HAVE THE SCENT OF A CEDAR.

Hosea 14:6, His branches shall spread; His beauty shall be like an olive tree, And his fragrance like Lebanon.

A- The testimony of Jesus Christ

2 Corinthians 2:14-15, Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

#5- The result of a proper repentance IS TO HAVE THE ABUNDANT BLESSING OF GOD.
