Book Purpose

The purpose of Revelation is to challenge/encourage believers, who are expectantly awaiting the reign of Christ, to live faithfully for Him despite worldly circumstances, persecution, and the cosmic battle between God and Satan.

Main Point

Continue to live life to the glory of God because Jesus is coming soon!

Revelation 22:6-9 - Revelation is Trustworthy

6 And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true.

6 And he said to me,
The angel from 22:1 speaks to John once again
“These words are trustworthy and true.
John is reminded that the vision will happen
The reason why the vision is trustworthy and true is because of the one Who gave the vision

And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”

And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,
Once again we see that God is the True Sovereign Lord ruling over all of His revealed Word
The spirits of the prophets refer to individual human spirits (the prophets) who are the vehicles to reveal the prophetic Word of God
Has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
The events of Revelation are soon at hand
This is not something far off in the distance
God does not intend to reveal the timeline to us, but instead wants us to be ready to meet him at any moment

7 “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

7 “And behold, I am coming soon.
Now Christ is speaking to John
The eschatological age started upon the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ
The end times have been upon us since that moment
Jesus is returning soon, but no specific timetable is given
Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
Revelation 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
Jesus states that the one who is blessed is the one who is obedient to Revelation
The blessing is not material or financial, but spiritual - eternal life with Christ is promised to those who follow the Lamb until the end

8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 but he said to me, “You must not do that!

8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.
John reiterates that he is the man who has received the visions from the Lord
And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me,
John’s response to the visions he heard/saw is to worship the one who gave them - the angel
9 But he said to me, “You must not do that!
The angel commands John not to worship in response to John bowing before the angel

I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book.

I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets
Why is John not to worship the angel? Because they are both servants of the Lord
Why are the prophets, John’s brothers, mentioned? John is writing a book of prophecy and is therefore a prophet
And with those who keep the words of this book.
Those who are obedient to Revelation are also grouped in to the fellowship of the redeemed
Thus all Christians for all ages are given a promise of blessing if we keep Revelation

Worship God.”

The command is simple - WORSHIP GOD ALONE!

Revelation 22:10-15 - The Time is Near

10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.

10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book,
The words of Revelation are not meant to be kept secret
Unlike Daniel, the words for Revelation are for every church in every age
For the time is near.
Daniel 12:4 ESV
4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”
Daniel 12:9 ESV
9 He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.

11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”

Daniel 12:10 ESV
10 Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand.
11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy,
The evil and filthy are commanded to do evil and filthy
These are those who belong to the city of Babylon, the followers of the dragon and his beasts
And the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
Yet, those who follow the Lamb are commanded to continue in righteousness and holiness
The bride of New Jerusalem is told to prepare herself for the bridegroom by living a holy lifestyle

12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.

12 “Behold, I am coming soon,
A promise to all those who are His - He’s coming soon!
Expectantly wait the return of Christ - today could be the day
Bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
Isaiah 40:10 ESV
10 Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
Christ will repay or reward when He returns
Over and over again emphasizes that those who receive the reward of eternal life must life a life pleasing to God not giving in to the dragon or the beasts

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,
Revelation 1:8 ESV
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
The first and the last,
Revelation 1:17 ESV
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last,
The beginning and the end.”
Revelation 21:6 ESV
6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes,
A reminder to live a life that is continuously holy before God because they will be blessed
So that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
The reward for those who live holy unto the Lord - New Jerusalem!
Eternal life is at stake!

15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters,
The end result of those who are the followers of the dragon, the beasts, and Babylon - eternal damnation
Dogs are those whose robes are unwashed and defiled
Sorcerers are those who use demonic magic and witchcraft
Sexually immoral are those who give into sexual sin and do not give their bodies as a sacrifice to God
Murderers are those who take life and justice into their own hands neglecting the reality that all are made in God’s image
Idolaters are those who worship anything but the one True Lord
And everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
These are those who love falsehood and hate truth
These are also the “cowards” - they claim to be Christians, but their lives are contrary to the Gospel and His Word
They lack a life of obedience revealing their love for falsehood

Revelation 22:16-21 - Come!

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches.
Revelation 1:1 ESV
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
The angel is to bear witness of the things he has received from Jesus
I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Jesus is the heir of the Davidic Covenant
Isaiah 11:1 ESV
1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
He is the fulfillment of the bright morning star
Numbers 24:17 ESV
17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.
Balaam’s final oracle

17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.”
The Holy Spirit and the Church invite the world to come to know Jesus as the true Lord
And let the one who hears say, “Come.”
The one who hears the words of Revelation are commanded to come to Christ
And let the one who is thirsty come;
The one desiring true salvation is commanded to come to Christ
Let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
Isaiah 55:1 ESV
1 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book,
19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Deuteronomy 4:2 ESV
2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you.
The warnings given here describe intentional and deliberate manipulation with Revelation, not proper exposition that leads to differing interpretations
Those who intentional distort the meaning of Revelation are threatened with eternal damnation - this is not just given to scribes, scholars, translators, pastors, or teachers - it’s given to EVERYONE

20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

20 He who testifies to these things says,
Christ Himself bears testimony to the book of Revelation
Revelation comes from Him and is entirely trustworthy
“Surely I am coming soon.” Amen.
The end times are upon us
Christ promises that He will return soon
Come, Lord Jesus!
Here is the desire of Revelation, the New Testament, and all Christ-followers
The course of history will end when He returns - everything is done

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.
Grace does not flow from an abstract reality, but from the person Jesus Christ
Who does it flow to? Those who are truly His
Amen.

Main Point

Continue to live life to the glory of God because Jesus is coming soon!

How Should we Live in Light of Revelation 22:6-21?

The purpose of Revelation is to challenge/encourage believers, who are expectantly awaiting the reign of Christ, to live faithfully for Him despite worldly circumstances, persecution, and the cosmic battle between God and Satan.

Through Christ, the only master and teacher of his church, to you be praise forever.

God the Father, for your Son Christ’s sake, show your mercy every time we stray. Reveal our sins to us more and more. Keep us in, and lead us to your truth.

Show us how to be faithful in everything we have received, whether it be less or more, and preserve us against all the scandals the whole world is filled with. Amen.
