So Send I You

Matthew 12:14–21

I. The Assignment of Jesus:

a. Matthew 12:18: “Behold my servant, whom I have chosen.” “My servant” is the Lord Jesus. God the Father chose God the Son for a specific task. Jesus said in Luke 19:10, “The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” And Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:15, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

b. Now, how does that apply to us? Jesus said in John 20:21, “As [the] Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” Jesus said, in John 15:16, “You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain.” God chose you to bring forth fruit, and the fruit of your life ought to be another Christian coming to know Jesus Christ. So, the first thing that I want you to see about Jesus is His assignment is our assignment.

II. The Recognition of Jesus:

a. Secondly, I want you to see His recognition. Notice what the Lord said about His Son in Matthew 12:18, “Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased.” Now, when God the Father gave God the Son the assignment of salvation of souls, God the Father said, “I am well pleased with my Son.” Why? Jesus said, in John 8:29, “I do always those things that please Him.” We ought to have no greater ambition in life than to please God.

b. That means that God is not pleased with most churches and most Christians. God recognized His Son, the Lord Jesus, and said, “Behold my servant, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased.” Why? Because Jesus said, “I do always those things that please Him.” The Lord Jesus wants to bring souls to Himself to bring glory to the Father.

III. The Helper of Jesus:

a. The third thing I want you to notice about the Lord Jesus, not only His assignment, and not only His recognition, but I want you to notice His Helper. Notice in Matthew 12:18 again: “I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.” The Lord Jesus, even though He was 100% God, did not do what He did in the strength of the deity, but Jesus achieved what He achieved in the power of the Holy Spirit. “I will put my spirit upon him.” Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

b. I’m so glad that Jesus did not use His power as God. I’m so glad that He laid it aside, became a man, though perfectly God, but yet as a man, was filled with the Holy Spirit and anointed with the Holy Spirit and therefore became my example. He couldn’t assign me to do something only God could do, but what a man, full of the Holy Spirit could do.
