“BUT GOD …” PART 1

• “But God …”

- Shifts our attention to necessary truth.

- Always presents a contrast.

- Takes something in a different direction.

- Gives the last word.

- Changes everything!

• Life is filled with “But God” moments.

• This is a test.

THE “BUT GOD” PRINCIPLE:

People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

1. This principle has an original context. 1 Samuel 9-16 (Acts 13:22)

Samuel – Saul – Eliab – David

2. This principle is repeated throughout the Scriptures.

Solomon – 1 Kings 8:39

David – 1 Chronicles 28:9

Paul – 1 Thessalonians 2:4

James – James 2:1-4

Jesus – John 7:24

3. We know and agree with this principle.

4. We struggle consistently applying this principle.

TWO APPLICATIONS:

• If all you have to go by is the outward appearance, then hold back on your judgments. Matthew 7:1-2

• If God pays the most attention to your heart, maybe you should too.

Matthew 15:8, 18-19

Hebrews 4:12-13

Proverbs 4:23

2 Chronicles 16:9
