The Kingdom is God’s and He will give it to whomever he pleases

Rehoboam’s Heavy Hand
He refused the counsel of those who sat under the wisdom of his father (10:6-14)
This required humility and patience but he would rather rule with wrath (krur)
He learned the wrong side of his father’s wisdom
A kingdom must be earned not demanded
He listened to the advice of others just like him
Those who encouraged his wrath and heavy hand
No grace, no patience, no love
Rehoboam’s Hardened Heart
In his pride, he was ready to destroy his brothers (10:16-11:4)
No repentance, no forgiveness, no tenderness
In his wrath, he becomes quickly angry
Instead of seeking God and reconciliation with Israel, he began trusting in his own defenses (11:5)
This only worked while he walked with God
All this fell away when he rejected God and turned to idolatry
Rehoboam’s Humbled Heart
His greatest mistake was trusting in his own abilities and strength rather than trust in God (12:1)
2 Chronicles 12:1-4 Egypt comes
This took the kingdom from Gold to Brass (12:9-10)
In his humility, God held his hand from destroying Judah and the king (12:12)
However the damages of wrath and pride continued for many years (12:14-15)
What did Israel need?
They needed a King who loved them and cared for them
They needed a KIng who would forgive and be patient
They needed a king who would effectionately draw them back to himself
They needed a king who would trust in God and would lead with tried and true wisdom
This King is Jesus
