Scripture Intro:

Scripture Reading (“Please stand…”)
2 Timothy 4:6 ESV
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.
2 Timothy 4:7–8 ESV
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Pray...

Intro:

The Endurance of Faith

(v. 7) “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
The life of faith is not an easy life.
Quite the opposite.
The life of faith is a difficult one.
B/c you will incur difficulty now,
and be promised glory later.
The life of faith is a walk of endurance...
It’s a marathon.
“fought the good fight”
“finished the race”
(not the 100-meter dash)
“kept the faith”
Through difficulty.
Read the end of this chapter later today (4:9-22)...
(v. 10) “Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me...”
(v. 14) “Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm...”
(v. 15) “Beware of him, for he strongly opposed our message.”
(v. 16) “At my first defense, no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me”
Yet....
2 Timothy 4:17 ESV
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

Our Future Hope

(v. 8) “Henceforth, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,”
Future Hope.
Something promised to us in eternity...
that we do not have now.
(v. 18) “The Lord will… bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom.”
“which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day”
“and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
We have our hope set on the return of Christ.
But how will we get a crown of righteousness?
Only on the record of someone else.
“righteous judge”...
Therefore, I deserve nothing but God’s wrath and judgment.
I deserve hell.
Yet, this says that we will get a crown!
How is that justice on God’s part?
How could he give sinners like us a crown of righteousness?
B/c we stand on the righteous record of Jesus.
---
Transition to the Table...
We’ve heard testimonies of God’s goodness.
And in 2 Timothy 4,
we see the endurance of the life of faith.
And the hope laid up in heaven for us.
And the Lord’s Supper signifies how that hope was secured.
The practice of partaking of the bread and the cup...
is a sign of God’s faithfulness to his people.
It is also a sign of what Jesus has done in order to save his people.
How is this a sign?
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Cor. 11:26)
Our only hope is found in Jesus Christ...
Who he is (his person)
What he has done (his work)
Lived a life of obedience (righteousness)
Died for the sins of his people (substitution)
Rose from the dead to give us life
What warning does the Apostle Paul give us?
“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Cor. 11:27-29)
First, this table is not for everyone.
You must profess faith in Christ alone for you salvation.
And have declared that publically in an evangelical church.
Children, refrain from taking until you meet with the elders.
Second, “examine yourself”...
“discerning the body of the Lord”
This table is a table of grace...
for God’s people who know they are sinners...
Yet, covered by his blood.
Let’s Pray
---
** On Communion Sunday...
If after 10:30,
go straight to the Lord’s Supper.

Close in Prayer

Closing Song:

“Emmanuel’s Land”
Our future hope...
the Promised Land for Israel was a foretaste of our eternal hope.
What we see dimly now...
we will see in fullness in eternity.

Benediction:

“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely,
and may your whole spirit and soul and body
be kept blameless [until] the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
