Giving Thanks with All My Heart
MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS…WE ARE COMING INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON THIS WEEK.....AND ON THIS COMING THURSDAY.....WE CELEBRATE A HOLIDAY CALLED THANKSGIVING.
IT’S A DAY THAT WE TYPICALLY GATHER WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ENJOY EACH OTHERS COMPANY....AND THE MAIN ATTRACTION IS THE THANKSGIVING MEAL THAT WE SHARE TOGETHER.
I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS GROWING UP …JUST ABOUT EVERY YEAR....MY FAMILY FROM PITTSBURGH WOULD COME DOWN TO MARYLAND AND SPEND THANKSGIVING TOGETHER.
MY MOM AND MY AUNTS WOULD START COOKING THE THANKSGIVING MEAL ON THE NIGHT BEFORE. AND ALL DURING THANKSGIVING DAY....
I WILL NEVER FORGET THE AROMA OF THE COOKING FOOD IN OUR HOUSE.....AND BY THE TIME IT WAS TIME TO EAT......EVERYONE WAS HUNGRY.
TURKEY.....HAM......BAKED BEANS....AND MAC AND CHEESE........GREEN BEANS AND STUFFING WERE JUST SOME OF THE DISHES THAT I REMEMBER....AND BEFORE WE SAT DOWN TO EAT.....WE WOULD COME TOGETHER....HOLD HANDS .....PRAY AND GIVE THANKS FOR THE FOOD WE WERE ABOUT TO EAT.
MANY OF US HAVE MEMORIES OF COMING TOGETHER WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR THANKSGIVING.
AND AS WE PREPARE FOR THANKSGIVING.....I ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO STOP AND REFLECT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THANKFUL TO YOU.
TRUTH BE TOLD......WE ALL HAVE A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR......
THE LORD HAS BEEN GOOD TO US ALL....
WE CAN BE THANKFUL FOR SO MANY THINGS.....
NOT JUST THE THINGS THAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR US......
BUT ALSO FOR WHO THE LORD IS TO US.....
YOU SEE TO ME.....THE LORD IS MY PEACE....AND HE GIVES ME PEACE THAT SURPASSES UNDERSTANDING......
THE LORD IS MY ROCK....WHICH MEANS I CAN ALWAYS LEAN ON HIM WHEN I GET WEARY.....
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD ......I SHALL NOT WANT.....
YES MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS.....WE HAVE SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR.
LOOK AT OUR TEXT THIS MORNING.....
Psalm 9:1 NRSV
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
THIS PSALM IS A DECLARATION OF PRAISE- IT IS PRAISE FROM THE HEART OF DAVID EXPRESSED IN A PUBLIC SETTING BECAUSE PRAISE IS NOT ONLY A PRIVATE MATTER BUT MADE PUBLIC BY OUR ACTS OF THANKSGIVING.
I WILL PRAISE YOU
I WILL TELL OTHERS ABOUT YOU
I WILL REJOICE AND LIFT UP YOUR NAME
THANKS…GIVING!
ONE VERSION OF
PSALMS 9:1
“I WILL GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD WITH MY WHOLE HEART; I WILL RECOUNT ALL OF YOUR WONDERFUL DEEDS.”
I WILL RECOUNT, I WILL REMEMBER.
WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?
YOU MUST BE THANKFUL TO GOD FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR YOU.
WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR? THANKFULNESS TO GOD IS ALSO EXPRESSED TO THE PEOPLE GOD HAS PUT IN YOUR LIFE TO BE A BLESSING.
I AM THANKFUL FOR MY WIFE.
I AM THANKFUL FOR MY CHILDREN AND THE GRANDKIDS THAT THEY HAVE GIVEN US.
I AM THANKFUL FOR MY FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH FAMILY, A PLACE TO WORSHIP, AND MY HEALTH.
‌‌
I AM MOST THANKFUL FOR JESUS. I AM THANKFUL FOR THE SALVATION THAT COMES THROUGH HIM AND THE RELATIONSHIP I HAVE WITH HIM.
IF I AM HAPPY AND THINGS ARE GOING WELL, I AM THANKFUL.
IF THINGS ARE NOT WELL AND LIFE IS A STRUGGLE, AND NOT WHAT I WOULD LIKE, I STILL MUST BE THANKFUL.
I SAY THIS BECAUSE OUR RELATIONSHIP AND THANKFULNESS IN CHRIST IS NOT BASED UPON WEATHER WE ARE HAPPY AT THE MOMENT, BUT ON A HEART OF GRATITUDE FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE.
REMEMBER BELOVED…..DAVID EXPRESSED HIS THANKSGIVING WITH HIS WHOLE HEART IN A PUBLIC SETTING…..HE WAS THANKFUL FOR GOD’S PROTECTION FROM HIS ENEMIES……
IT WAS A PUBLIC DECLARATION……AND WITH THAT SAID….WE ARE GOING TO DO SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT THIS MORNING……THE HOLY SPIRIT PUT ON MY HEART AS I WAS PREPARING THIS SERMON…..THAT WE NEED TO MAKE A CONGREGATIONAL DECLARATION….AND FILL THIS ATMOSPHERE WITH PRAISES OF THANKS….SO I’M GOING TO BE OBEDIENT …
WE NEED TO SAY WHAT WE ARE THANKFUL FOR….I ALREADY SAID A MINUTE AGO WHAT I WAS THANKFUL FOR…..I’M NOT GONNA CALL ON YOU…BUT WE NEED TO EXPRESS OUR THANKS TO GOD….
SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE BEEN CAUGHT OFF GUARD…BUT NOW ITS TIME TO DECLARE…..GIVE THANKS WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART…
IF YOU ARE WORSHIPING VIA OUR LIVE STREAM….YOU CAN PARTICIPATE TOO….TYPE IN THE COMMENTS ….
FILL THIS PLACE WITH YOUR THANKSGIVING
WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?
I. EXPRESSING OUR LOVE FOR GOD (FOREMOST)
Psalm 95:2 NRSV
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
THE PSALMIST IS TELLING US THAT THE WAY WE LOVE GOD IS BY EXPRESSING OUR LOVE NOT ONLY IN WORDS BUT BY OUR ACTIONS. WE LOVE GOD BY COMING INTO HIS PRESENCE AND DESIRING THAT INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP AND WE BRING HIM OUR BEST WHEN WE PRESENT OURSELVES AND OFFER UP SONGS OF PRAISE-WORSHIP. AND WE ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR US INSTEAD OF ALWAYS WHAT WE NEED HIM TO DO.
ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
“FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.”
FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE- AMEN.
“AND NOW WE THANK YOU, OUR GOD, AND PRAISE YOUR GLORIOUS NAME.”
PSALM 7:17
(ESV)
“I WILL GIVE TO THE LORD THE THANKS DUE TO HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND I WILL SING PRAISE TO THE NAME OF THE LORD, THE MOST HIGH.
OUR LIVES AS WELL AS OUR WORDS ARE LOVE BEING GIVEN BACK TO GOD.
II. EXPRESS OUR LOVE TO EACH OTHER
PHIL. 1:3
“I THANK MY GOD IN ALL MY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU”
WE ARE TO BE AN EXTENSION OF GOD’S LOVE TO EACH OTHER, AS GOD HAS LOVED US, WE ARE TO LOVE EACH OTHER.
JOHN 13:34-35
“A NEW COMMANDMENT I GIVE TO YOU, THAT YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER; JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, YOU ALSO ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. BY THIS ALL PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YOU HAVE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER.”
WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY EVERYDAY TO TELL SOMEONE WHAT THEY MEAN TO US.
EXPRESSING IT NOT ONLY IN WORDS BUT BY OUR ACTIONS.
IT DOES NOT COST ANYTHING TO TELL SOMEONE THANK YOU.
IT DOES NOT BREAK THE BANK TO GO AN EXTRA MILE AND EXPRESS GRATITUDE.
OUR BEING THANKFUL GOES DEEPER THAN JUST BEING THANKFUL FOR OVERCOMING DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES IN OUR LIVES.
WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT THIS MORNING….. IS THE THANKFULNESS THAT IS RESERVED FOR GOD AND HIM ALONE.
GIVING THANKS TO GOD IS A MAJOR PART OF OUR WORSHIPPING HIM BECAUSE ……WE YIELD AND RECOGNIZE WHAT HE IS DOING IN OUR LIVES.
WE MUST STOP AND REMEMBER....... WE ARE GRATEFUL....... WHICH THEN COMES OUT IN OUR PRAISE OF THANKSGIVING.
GIVING THANKS TO GOD COMES FROM A PLACE WITHIN US WHERE WE REMEMBER WHERE WE COULD BE WITHOUT HIM –‌
NOT JUST IN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN PHYSICALLY.......BUT WHERE WE WILL SPEND ETERNITY BECAUSE OF THE SINGLE CHOICE HE MADE IN SENDING HIS SON TO DIE FOR US.
IF WE ARE WALKING IN A PLACE WHERE WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR US…… OUR BEING GRATEFUL IS A STATE OF THANKFULNESS …….AND IT IS OUR BEING THANKFUL THAT CAUSES US TO WANT TO SPEND MORE AND MORE TIME IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD.
WHEN WE LOOK AROUND AND THINK ABOUT THE WONDERFUL GOODNESS OF OUR GOD…..DO WE NOT FEEL A DEEP DESIRE TO PRAISE HIM AND GIVE HIM THANKS?
WHEN YOU ARE DOWN AND DISCOURAGED AND YOU READ THIS PSALM YOU ARE REMINDED THAT THE LORD IS GOOD, HIS MERCY IS UNENDING AND IN SPITE OF WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH YOU NEED TO GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD.
IT IS IN THANKING THE LORD THAT YOU WILL OVERCOME IN YOUR TRIALS.
IT IS WHILE THANKING GOD THAT WE REALIZE HOW BLESSED WE ARE.
IT IS IN THANKING GOD THAT WE CAN TAKE TIME TO COUNT OUR BLESSINGS.
WHEN WE THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS THAT GOD IS GOOD……..THERE ARE A FEW MEANINGS THAT COMES TO MY MIND………
GOD IS ETERNAL
GOD IS FAITHFUL
GOD IS GREAT
GOD IS HOLY (
IS 6:3
)
GOD IS INFINITE (
JOB 11:7-10
)
THE PSALMIST KNEW OF ALL THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD BUT WHEN HE CAME TO WRITING THE FIRST VERSE OF
PSALM 118
THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRED HIM TO WRITE GOD IS GOOD.
UNLIKE THE PAGAN GODS, GOD IS GOOD
UNLIKE SATAN....GOD IS GOOD
UNLIKE HUMANITY GOD IS GOOD
YES MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS…..GOD IS GOOD
IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME ASK MOSES AND HE WOULD SAY “PHARAOH PRONOUNCED A DEATH SENTENCE ON ME WHEN I WAS JUST A BABY BUT GOD WAS GOOD TO ME AND SPARED MY LIFE.”
ASK DAVID AND HE WOULD SAY GOLIATH TRIED TO KILL ME AND PROMISED TO GIVE MY BODY TO THE BIRDS AND THE DOGS BUT GOD WAS GOOD TO ME.”
ASK THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD AND SHE WOULD TELL YOU “I WAS BLEEDING TO DEATH BUT WHEN I TOUCHED THE HEM OF HIS GARMENT I WAS INSTANTLY HEALED, GOD IS GOOD TO ME.”
GOD IS NOT ONLY GOOD …….BUT HE IS MERCIFUL.
THE WORD MERCY MEANS LENIENCY, COMPASSION, FORGIVENESS, KINDNESS, PITY, TOLERANCE, CHARITY AND PITY.
GOD’S MERCY IS UNDESERVED
PS 103:8-10
THE LORD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS, SLOW TO ANGER, AND PLENTEOUS IN MERCY.
9 HE WILL NOT ALWAYS CHIDE: NEITHER WILL HE KEEP HIS ANGER FOR EVER.
10 HE HATH NOT DEALT WITH US AFTER OUR SINS; NOR REWARDED US ACCORDING TO OUR INIQUITIES.
YES MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS…….GOD IS MERCIFUL
ASK NOAH AND HE MAY TELL YOU, "I COULD HAVE DROWNED IN THE FLOOD BUT GOD WAS MERCIFUL AND HE RESCUED ME."
ASK JOSEPH WHILE HE WAS IN PRISON GOD WAS MERCIFUL TO HIM.
GENESIS 39:21, 22
SAYS "BUT THE LORD WAS WITH JOSEPH, AND SHEWED HIM MERCY, AND GAVE HIM FAVOUR IN THE SIGHT OF THE KEEPER OF THE PRISON."
ASK DAVID AND HE WILL TELL YOU "SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY SHALL FOLLOW ME ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE: AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOR EVER." (
PSALMS 23:6)
ASK ME AND I WILL TELL YOU, “ I WAS BORN WEIGHING 4 LBS….AND A FEW OUNCES…..SICK AND JAUNDICE…..THE DOCTOR SAID HE WOULDN’T BET A WOODEN NICKEL THAT I WOULD LIVE…… BUT TO GOD BE THE GLORY…….. GOD HAD MERCY UPON ME AND SAVED MY LIFE…..AND MY SOUL.”
GIVE THANKS TO GOD!!!
