MY YEARS AS REFORMED
PHIL
PAUL IS CALLING THE CHURCH TO A LIFE OF JOY WHICH COMES ONLY THROUGH THE PURSUIT OF JOY:
THIS PURSUIT COMES FROM A COUNTER-CULTURAL THOUGHT THAT MUST NOT ONLY BE:
THE PATTER OF OUR LIFE
BUT ALSO THE POSTURE/PASSION OF OUR HEART
THAT COUNTER-CULTURAL THOUGHT IS THIS:
HUMILIATION PRECEDES EXALTATION
Paul begins his
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
ENCOURAGEMENT: THIS IS WHAT YOU GIVE WHEN SOMEONE IS STRUGGLING
COMFORT: THIS IS WHAT YOU FEEL AS A RESULT OF BEING ENCOURAGED
PARTICIPATION IN THIS SPIRIT: THE ACT OF SHARING IN THE SPIRITUAL REALITIES OF BEING IN A SAVED COMMUNITY
AFFECTION/SYMPATHY:
AFFECTION: DEEPLY FELT PASSION THAT INVOLVES FEELING WHAT OTHERS ARE FEELING
SYMPATHY: A DEEPER AND CLEARER AWARENESS OF ANOTHER’S SUFFERING AND OR STRUGGLES
complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
