REVELATION - The Throne of God part 5
SLIDE 1 “WHO IS WORTHY” IMAGE SLIDE
Encouragement from worship
Today we will will gain more insight and focus / why we worship
Why we worship and also the sense of awe in “worthy is the lamb”
Last week we saw that John was weeping
SLIDE 2
Revelation 5:1 (NASB95)
1 I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals.
SLIDE 3
Revelation 5:2–3 (NASB95)
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?”
3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look in
SLIDE 4
Revelation 5:4–5 (NASB95)
4 Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it;
5 and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”
So this week I have been feeling the Lord is wanting us to grasp that “worthy” part today
SLIDE 5 “WHO IS WORTHY” IMAGE SLIDE
Let that be magnified for us for Him to be magnified in us
We see in the image here the lion and the lamb
Many of us have grown up in church and told these things
Or its just been repeated enough over time its part of our Christian anthem
As I have shared the beauty of the Book of Revelation is so much of the rest of the word of God builds into Revelation
You really have to start with the word “oracles”
The word oracles 37 times in the bible
The first time this word took a hold on me is in Romans 3 “what advantage does the Jew have?” “Great in every respect as they were entrusted with the oracles of God”
SLIDE 6
ORACLE
“brief utterance”
The word means “brief utterance” (utterance form God)
I know some are thinking, “What does this have to do with the lion and the lamb / who is worthy?” Hold on/ pay attention and you will be blessed by all this
The Theological Dictionary of New Testament says this-
“The term oracular sayings tend to disappear for us in time”
SLIDE 7
“The term oracle has become the vehicle for the biblical conception for the revelation of God” - Theological Dictionary of the New Testament
BUT - “The term oracle has become the vehicle for the biblical conception for the revelation of God”
We go to book of Matthew 22 where a question was asked to Jesus
SLIDE 8
Matthew 22:36–37 (NASB95)
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
SLIDE 9
Matthew 22:38–40 (NASB95)
38 “This is the great and foremost commandment.
39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
These began as utterances from God to man - who were these men? Prophets
We don’t simply read these words and “whala” - this is growing in the Lord in Spirit and in Truth - example (we have neighbors)
“At work or school we have neighbors also”
I love that the TDNT also says this about oracle (a word from God)
SLIDE 10
the statements of Jn. 1:1 simply express the fact that this Word always goes forth as the divine Word, that it cannot be detached from God, that it is always the Word of God -TDNT
Remember the whole point today is “Who is Worthy”
SLIDE 11 “WHO IS WORTHY” IMAGE SLIDE
The Lord is building for us this scene in heaven who is worthy
Another example - law and the prophets - started with an “oracle” from God
Ten Commandments - Moses a prophet?
SLIDE 12 “MOSES TEN COMMANDMENTS SLIDE”
Gotta love Charleston Heston
Moses really set the stage for the computer age - “downloaded the commandments on a tablet form the cloud”
SLIDE 13 “TEN COMMANDMENTS”
These were oracles of God through the Jews, we receive Christ Jesus because of the Jews - remember Romans at the start of the message “they were first entrusted with the oracles of God” all builds to Revelation from that
That’s why we need to keep growing in Christ and His word - its always about building in the Revelation of God
Its the Lords desire for us to keep growing in Christ = Lets look at Hebrews 5:12 Hebrews 5:12 and see this
SLIDE 14
Hebrews 5:12 (NASB95)
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
So how did we get to the Lion part - did it start with an utterance and oracle
Jacob is now old - in Egypt with his family
Summoned his sons “Assemble yourselves so that I may tell you what befalls you in the days to come”
He starts with Reuben, then Simeon the Levi
SLIDE 15
Genesis 49:8–9 (NASB95)
8 “Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
9 “Judah is a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He couches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a lion, who dares rouse him up?
SLIDE 16
Genesis 49:10–11 (NASB95)
10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes,
And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 “He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
SLIDE 17
Genesis 49:12 (NASB95)
12 “His eyes are dull from wine,
And his teeth white from milk.
See now how this builds Jesus as the Lion of Judah
My great defender - He is worthy to be praised
SLIDE 18 “WHO IS WORTHY” IMAGE SLIDE
Dive into the word of God and look for the oracles - how God used the Jews to be blessed through then in Christ in fullness
I remember what impacted me most when going to Tennessee and studying God’s word at Precept Ministries - examples
It was these oracles and revelations that God used to build to Jesus - everything pointed to Jesus
Abraham Issac on the mountain
Even the rainbow
Jacob’s ladder
Melchizedek - wow
