Passage Background and Context

From Creation week to the life of Jesus on earth
The Eternity of de Word (Jesus)
Darkness as chaos, evil and general negativity
God as acting like a human Father
Incarnation as the embodiment of a deity
The intention of John’s introduction it’s to show that Jesus’ actions are God’s actions (Jesus union with God)
The Word as God’s creating and sustaining power
John 1:1–8 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
Jesus is the light of all mankind. This doesn’t mean that all man know him but that everyone has access to him. Like the sun.
Some characteristics of those that are in the light are
1 Thessalonians 5:5 NIV
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
Ephesians 5:9 NIV
(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
1 John 1:7 NIV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Light illuminates but also produces heat. Not only we can know the truth but live by it with passion
John 1:9–13 NIV
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
There’s different ways to receive Jesus (λαμβάνω): receive or take
John 13:20 NIV
Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
John 19:1 NIV
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
Jesus is seen as a historical figure today, that’s how must people receive him, as someone that lived and died in the past
John 1:14–18 NIV
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
What God wants to share with Humanity is Grace and Truth!! They come in the same package which is His Son Jesus.
John 8:32 NIV
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The truth will never be oppressive because it comes with grace.
Like a coin with two faces but one value. One side is not independent of the other
If we have received Jesus with humility as our must precious gift we need to believe this about our identity:
We are sons and daughters of God
Anything from the dark world doesn’t belong to us
We are part of a new family and all our sins have been purified
By walking in His light we will be able to know all truth, all the things that are to be known about life in this time and in the time to come and, what is better, we will experience it with fullness of Grace. Becoming little lights for His glory!!0
