Moralistic Therapeutic Deism Week 2

MTD IS:
1. A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.
2. God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other.
3. The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
4. God does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
5. Good people go to heaven when they die.
Too many individuals, churches, and organizations live according to this ethic that is leading people away from the grace of Christ.

Hailey Julia - God “Chillin” in heaven?
Is this MTD?
Hailey Julia - God “chillin” in heaven?
is there an aspect of MTD to this short?
What is it?
God is up in the clouds chilling.
God knows things we don’t (true)
This is lighthearted and fun honestly, but there is still a hint of MTD there.
2. Andy Stanley
Is this MTD?
If so, what parts of MTD did you see?
BIG PROBLEMS:
A) “The rules don’t apply to you.”
uh yeah they do.
Exodus 20 the ten commandments: Do not lie. Do not steal. Do not murder.
Those laws don’t SAVE YOU! Obeying those laws don’t provide salvation for you.
The laws themselves drive you back to know our sin and to know God!
Romans 3:20 “20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
The rules apply to everyone! Terrible theology!
Are there certain rules that apply to Christians and not unbelievers. Yes… that is true, but that’s not what Stanley is saying in my opinion.
B) He apologizes to unbelievers for Christians standing on the truth of God’s word.
To me, this is the biggest falsehood in this clip.
It seems as though Stanley believes we should only let people know God’s expectations once they are believers.
But the big catch 22 here is, how can anyone ever become a believer then if we never let them know God’s expectations!
He hates sin!
He has paid for sin!
What a distortion of the gospel. This is driving people away from Christ not to Him!
I could go on in this clip…
but remember Romans 5:8 “8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Acts 2:37-41 “37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.”
In Acts 2, People here the bad news!
They hear about their sin and they ask “What shall we do?”
No one walks away from Stanley here and asks, “What shall we do?”
That’s another reason this is MTD and should be rejected.
proverbs 30:5 “5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”
3. Steven Furtick “God Broke the law for love”.
Is this MTD?
Matthew 5:17 “17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
The underlying message here is really this:
For the right reason, it’s ok to break God’s laws…
If we are loving, it’s ok to break God’s laws…
wew.
Do you see the danger there?
You could easily slip homosexuality, transgenderism in there…
I love these people, I want them to know God, so I’m going to ignore the parts of God’s laws that apply to them and instead love them and then they will know Jesus.
This is “God just wants us to be nice” theology.
Romans 1:24-25 “24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”
Jesus fulfilled the law.
He was the only one who could!
That’s the point of the law!!!!!!
It points us to Christ!
IT shows us we DON”T measure up, only HE CAN!
If Jesus Himself couldn’t keep the law, then what are we doing here!
He fulfilled it in all grace, all mercy, and extended what only He could accomplish back to us.
4. Rev Brandan “Jesus is Racist”
“She speaks truth to power… Her boldness to speak truth changes Jesus’ mind. Jesus repents of his racism and extends healing to her daughter. This is a reminder Jesus is human with prejudices and bias’ and this woman was willing to stand up and speak truth.”
This guy rejects Jesus as God.
What is Jesus doing here? He’s going to remove a demon from a Gentile lady’s daughter.
If Jesus himself is wrong, doing something evil, why would evil do something to hurt itself?
This would be like Clemson on Saturday, creating a turnover, and then running the wrong way and scoring in the other teams endzone.
Jesus says this well in Matthew 12:25 “25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.”
Evil won’t ever throw evil out of the room.
However, God… to show his power of sin, death, creation, and the created, He would certainly show his power over evil.
2. Why did Jesus call her a dog? Isn’t that racist? Even if Brandan is wrong about most, isn’t he right about that?
The people of Tyre and Sidon were not known for their faith.
They were known for being against the Jews!
Matthew 15 also has this account.
The word for “Dog” was kynarion which means “little dog”
This was not a derogatory term, but more an endearing term like a pet.
Jesus is testing this woman here to see if her faith is genuine.
If she is there to mock him, as would be normal from tyre and sidon, then she will respond in anger to Jesus’ response.
If she is there in genuine faith, then surely she will hear “little dog” as endearing and not abrasive as “dog” typically was from Jews.
Matthew 15:27 “27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.””
This verse confirms the “Little dog” translation because again, don’t we love pets?
I feel like some people today even love their pets more than they love humans.
which brings us back to the woman and her faith.
Jesus did come first for the Jews.
His plan was to redeem the family of Abraham that from them All nations would be blessed.
Remember that promise to Abraham.
And yet, God’s grace is not exclusive to one family but open to all.
Moreover, twice in the gospels, Jesus uses the phrase “great faith” to describe someone’s faith in Him.
Once in Matthew 8:5-13 to describe the faith of the centurion (not a Jew)
Once here in Matthew 15 to describe the faith of the syrophoenician woman.
What faith she had in Jesus.
What grace and patience God has with all of us!
