Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the the log that is in your own eye?

Matthew 7:1–6 (NASB95)
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?
“You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
What is this passage not talking about?
that you have to be perfect before you can judge anyone 1 Jn. 1:8.
Pick & choose who to help.
not judge anyone.
judge as gulity/ condemn
James 4:11–12 NASB95
Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
Rom. 2 they were judging the gentiles on things that the Jews were doing.
If we are never to judge we cannot fulfill these passages...
Mt. 7:18-20 ““A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “So then, you will know them by their fruits.”
Jn. 7:24 ““Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.””
Gal. 6:1 “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.”
Mt. 18:15-19 ““If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.”
I can judge but I can not condemn
If God says it —> I can report it God and his word already condemn it. Jn. 3:17 - 18
John 3:17–18 NASB95
“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Who Is this passage talking about?
hypocrite
faultfinder
self-righteous - blinded himself to his faults - conceited
Luke 18:10–14 NASB95
“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. “The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ “I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Why do they not see the log in their own eye?
can’t see his own faults
builds himself up by tearing others down (does it to make his light shine brighter)
my sins are not as bad as his (makes me feel better) 2 Cor. 10:12 “For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.”
envious of the good fortune of another - envy destroys. Gal. 5:19-21 “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Prov. 14:30 “A tranquil heart is life to the body, But passion is rottenness to the bones.” 1 Cor. 13:4 “Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,”
“who steals my purse steal trash, --
but he that filches from my good name,
robs me of that which enriches him not,
and makes me poor indeed.”
Who does the one with the log in his eye really hurt?
Himself
blinds himself to his own problems, can’t fix them
can’t see good in others (only looking for evil)
not a fact finder (can’t discern good or evil) Heb. 5:14 “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.”
has few friends Matt. 7:2 ““For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” Prov. 22:24-25 “Do not associate with a man given to anger; Or go with a hot-tempered man, Or you will learn his ways And find a snare for yourself.”
impossible for him to repent Lk. 18:14 ““I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.””
How do we avoid being a self-righteous hypocrite?
Realize it takes nothing great physically or mentally to be a faultfinder; no talent, no self-denial, no brain, no character.
know that being self-righteous is sinful
look for good in people (ex. black spot)
look at self first (1 Jn. 1:8 all sin Jas. 5:16 then help others)
What should I do if I am the target of the fault-finder?
Benjamin Franklin “ Be sure you are right and go ahead.”
1 Pet. 3:17 “For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.” make sure you doing right, be open to examining your life.
Abraham Lincoln “I do the very best I know how, the very best I can; I mean to keep doing so to the end. If the ends brings me out alright, what is said against me won’t amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference.
