Introduction

How many of you have ever had the flu?
What were some of your symptoms?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention there are 8 different symptoms that people could have if they have the flu.
Fever*/feeling feverish or chills
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
The flu is just one example of an illness revealing itself in multiple ways. Like how an illness can have multiple symptoms, sin can reveal itself in multiple areas of life. For example, in 1 Corinthians we’ve seen pride has shown itself in two ways so far in the church in Corinth.
1. Division within the church which is pride by having a primary identity in a person other than Jesus.
2. The Corinthians had pride in their willingness to accept an unrepentant sexually immoral man.
In tonight’s lesson, we’ll see pride reveal itself in two more ways.
Having pride in always having their way above glorifying God.
Having pride in putting bodily desires above glorifying God.
So let’s get into our lesson, please open your scripture notebooks to 1 Corinthians 6. As always be ready to underline verse or circle words that stick out to you or that you have questions about to address in your small groups.
Read 1 Corinthians 6:1-11.

6 If any of you has a dispute against another, how dare you take it to court before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Or don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the trivial cases? 3 Don’t you know that we will judge angels—how much more matters of this life? 4 So if you have such matters, do you appoint as your judges those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame! Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between fellow believers? 6 Instead, brother goes to court against brother, and that before unbelievers!

7 As it is, to have legal disputes against one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves do wrong and cheat—and you do this to brothers and sisters! 9 Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or males who have sex with males, 10 no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

If you haven’t done this already I want you to underline verse 7.
The first six verses of this chapter is Paul’s rebuke of the action of two believers going to court against one another. His rebuke here is just as strong as his rebuke to the church for their lack of disciplining the guy who had sexual relations with his step-mom in chapter 5. Paul is really trying to get the attention of the Corinthians here.
I had you underline verse 7 because it’s here that Paul exposes the pride of the Corinthians.
Re-read verse 7.
When I read the phrase “already a defeat for you”, I think of playing a team game. Let’s take capture the flag for example since that was our group game. The phrase “already a defeat for you” seen in capture the flag would look like if you had some members on your team decided that they were going to just sit down at the beginning of a round and not help the team protect the team flag or go get the other team’s flag. It’d be as if they forgot or they didn’t care about the mission of the team.
Connect this illustration to the mission of a Christian- glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
When this doesn’t happen we are a poor witness to the unsaved world and instead of advancing the gospel, we are letting witness of Christ be defeated to unbelievers.
v. 8 -There were people in the Corinthian church who were cheating and doing wrong toward others.
This brings us to the first place in our passage where the Corinthian’s pride seen.

Having pride in always having their way above glorifying God.

There were people who had to have it their way which meant getting the better end of the deal. No one was willing to sacrifice. Either they had to get the better deal or it had to be at least equal. There was no thought of sacrifice.
Paul says that those who live this way without repenting and acknowledging it as sin will not spend eternity with God but rather eternity apart from God in Hell. This can seem kinda harsh but it reveals a heart of a person that only wants to live for their benefit about glorifying God.

Paul then lists various sinful lifestyles of people who strive to live only for their benefit instead of glorifying God in verses 9 & 10.
Verse 11 is another verse I want you to underline if you haven’t already.
This verse indicates that people who have lived these lifestyles in their lives before confessing Jesus as their savior and Lord are washed clean and seen as righteous in the sight by the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Because this is true Paul brings back to mind that the identity of the Corinthians should be ground and rooted in Jesus and Jesus alone.
Paul time to address another way pride was being lived out in the church at Corinth.
Read 1 Cor. 6:12-20.

12 “Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 “Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will do away with both of them. However, the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body? So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh. 17 But anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.

18 Flee sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. 19 Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.

If you haven’t already I want you to underline verse 12.
In this phrase “everything is permissible for me” do you notice that it is in quotes? This is because Paul is quoting a saying that was popular in the Corinthian church. This phrase is kinda of a half truth.
Explain here.
Then Paul writes but not everything is beneficial.
Explain here.
Underline verse 13.
Notice the next line that is in quotes?
Explain.
Prostitution in that age. Porn and & masturbation in current day.

Having pride in putting bodily desires above glorifying God

This brings us to verse 18.
